"Sponginess" what a perfect way to describe how a Kahler feels. The heavy spring set eliminated that?

I was told if you buy the springs for the bass kahlers, it will react just like a floyd. I love kahlers , but then again, i use them the same way Dave Mustaine uses them, for a fine tuning trem, not much whammying.

Well, it solved my problem. I never knew why people bitched about the feel of Kahlers, until I got a hold of a Model 6 with the standard springs. Horrible feelings, that spring set should not be allowed to exist.

I'm pretty sure the bulk of the USA Jacksons with Kahlers have the heavy set from the factory. I know some people still find them spongy, but these are generally the same people who use five springs in their Floyds.

I have both Floyd and Kahler guitars. Everybody knows how a Floyd works and how it sounds.

Kahlers are very interesting units, there are a lot of options you can explore. The light springs have a very light feel to the bar, some people like it, some don't. If you have the heavy springs in the Kahler, it feels more Floyd-like. Kahlers had a lot of interchangeable parts that can change the tone of them. I personally like the steel rollers with the brass cam. Steel rollers have a bit more harmonic content and sustain than the brass rollers, and the brass cam delivers a fat sound. The steel cam is brighter sounding. I haven't tried the aluminum cam. The Kahler is bolted right to the body with less routing, so that accounts for the fatter, chunkier tone they tend to have. A Floyd has a brighter, cutting tone with screaming harmonics but you tend to sacrifice some beef and chunk. Each has their pros and cons.

One cool thing is if you get the deluxe Kahler 'lever' lock nut, you don't need any tools to change the strings!

I've noticed that you have to keep the adjustment screws pretty tight to prevent string slipage, which is my one complaint with the unit. I absolutely love Kahlers, but I hate their string locks. However, I don't like the Floyd locking nut, either, because I don't like the tone of a metal nut. I need to find some of the behind the nut, floyd-style nuts that a lot of the BC Rich NJ's from the 80's came with. No slipage, no alignment problems, they just work.
