Intonation with Locking Nut

I did a search on our forum but did not find an answer to this question:

Does it make any difference if you set the intonation on a Floyd with the nut locked down or open?

Does anyone have any preferences one way or the other?

My argument would be that it doesn't make a difference. Intonation relies on string speaking length, from where it leaves the nut to where it inserts itself into the Floyd Rose saddle. All the locking nut does is to sharpen notes when it is locked down, which the fine tuners will take care of in the last step of your setup.

No it doesn't matter, it doesn't change the distance from the nut to the bridge saddle when its locked or unlocked. I do it without the locking nut clammped because you have to loosen the string to move the saddle and that is a pain in the ass as it is [img]/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img] Epecially since itis a trial and error until you have it right. I wouldn't want to have to lock and unluck the nut every time too.

The beauty of the OFR is once you do have intonated right, it stays right for years [img]/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]
