Re: Seymour Duncan Iommi

THe SH-TI1b was a short lived pickup and was available (probably still is) from the custom shop. Evan told me when I visited the factory that it was 2 telecaster bobbins together so it wasn't exactly a drop in replacement for anyone that wanted to try it in their axe, without modification.

What confused me was there was a model called the SILVERBIRD that I always thought was the Tony Iommi model since it also has dual blades and I think it uses the same tele bobbins, so I had always gotten them mixed up and like the TI model little or no info available on these.

Somehow these 2 descriptions don't sound like the same pickup yet they are: ps. parenthesis are my words.

Seymour Duncan's websites description: The HB-104 is a high-output blade humbucker that's based on a design we created for England's Patrick Eggle Guitars (Tony Iommi Model SH-TI1b). The guitar was short-lived, but the pickup lives on in some recent guitar designs from Schecter and Jackson. (alluding to the fact that the HB104 is basically the same pickup as the SH-TI1b Tony Iommi Model, which it is not)

From Evans post in the forum: we developed a blade version of the Duncan Designed HB-103(which is a dull and muddy version of a Duncan Distortion) and we called it the HB-104.

However, unlike the Seymour Duncan Iommi, with this pickup, the magnet was underneath the pickup, like on a standard humbucker. The blades were used to direct the magnetism towards the strings -- like on a Dimebucker or a Hot Rails.

I can see where one would get misled reading the SD description and thinking it would be a close approximation to the original Tony Iommi pickup and Evan admittedly says it was based off the HB103 just with a blade to accomodate that Schecter 5 String guitar.

Basically the only thing in common with the Tony Iommi model is looks?

Wow, that's some cool info. Thank you so much!

I've got my KBR now and the Iommi pickup is definately not some cheap pickup. It's big, powerful and articulate and I love it. My impression is that this is the real deal. I'm still curious as with what intention this is produced. Is it a custom shop pickup or a limited series? Either way, I'm very happy that this extraordinary model comes with an import. It gives the KBR a little extra.

EDIT
I want to add that it's so cool to have such a monstrous big humbucker that the pickup ring is cut to fit it.
