• intonation problems

my RR5, the a string will not intonate. I tune it open, and check it all over the place, check it at the 12th, check it at the 5th, the 7th fret, and its always flat. I move the saddle on the bridge back, and back, and back, and back, and it doesnt change a damn thing! what gives?

If it's flat, don't you want to shorten the stirng i.e. move the saddle forward? I can't remember for sure.

I can never remember either that's why I refer to my handy dandy Dan Erlewine books.

Move the saddle back to go sharp... Move it forward to go flat.
Something should be changing.

If you FRET it and it's FLAT move it FORWARD.

What gauge strings are you using, and are you tuning to E? Or drop tuning?

using 11-50, tuning to D, and dropping the lowest string to C

Ditto, only the books weren't at my work. I was really stressing without my books to cheat from

Please, if you give me a test on this stuff, make it an open book exam

General convention is that a heavier string will sharpen intonation. So perhaps you want to try using an even heavier set of strings, like say Not-Even-Slinky's. Otherwise, you could always (ick) raise your bridge to sharpen intonation.

Also what kind of bridge do you have?

Re: intonation problems

I had a FR2 (pot metal base) that wouldn't intonate. I changed to a hardened steel one and it fixed it.

I also had a bad string once that did that.
