Just look at mid to upper level Gibsons. I think the call it "nibs" - the part of the binding next to the ends of the fret.

Correct.. The binding is set into the fretboard by removing material that is the same thickness of the binding (or close anyway). It adds no width to the neck. On a finished neck, such as a Les Paul, binding doesn't do much to change the feel because it is under the clear coat. But on unfinished or oiled necks, the binding makes a smoother edge. For me, it's mostly a visual thing though, as I can play one whatever is in my hand at the time. I love the look of a fully bound Jackson neck.

What material is used in the binding?

Usually plastic, though I have seen some with wooden binding and abalone binding.

I find binding to be essential. The E/E bending becomes better, because of some more width.

However, some classical songs or variations require you to be able to bend those strings off the fretboard to acquire a high note or hit a certain harmonic. Evidently in such cases neckbinding would not be favorable.

              And it looks awesome. :p

Exactly, 1 11/16" is 1 11/16".. the REAL reason for R3 and R4 FLoyd nuts is that some prefer a narrower string spacing at the nut on that particular width,, and some like it a bit farter apart. That´s the only reason.

Binding is a touch of craftmanship. I'm certain that it was done to make the guitar distinctive and higher end. Whether it plays better or affects the sound, I don't know. The bottom line is a neck well done won't eat you hand up.

Binding = More expensive guitar in general. Looks cool too.

                            I don't agree actually.

To me they have always made the neck look separate to the guitar, if the body also had binding then it would look more continuous and not interrupt the flow of the lines.
