  • 86 Soloist Wiring Diagram

    Hi all,

Noob here, but have owned Jacksons since 95.

I have just got my hands on an 86 USA soloist (J1826) and am trying to restore the circuitry.

It has 2 passive humbuckers and what appears to be a preamp boost circuit (9V battery in the circuit). The volume pot is as usual but the other 2 pots are not connected to anythnig.

I am told these are a bass and treble boost controls for the preamp boost. I am also told that one of the pots should have a circuit board on the back but has been changed for a regular tone pot.

Does anyone have a wiring diagram for the original circuit?

That way I can work out which pot I need and how to get it all working again.

Welcome bratfink. I can't help you much right now, but do you have any scribbling in the trem(?) cavity or elsewhere on the guitar? An example: VMT5W = Vol, Mid boost, Tone, 5-way switch. Hey, i also got a pic of a mid boost circuitry i've pulled. Maybe it can come in handy at some point..:

Diagrams for the midboost are here:

      http://www.jcfonline.com/resources/J.../target16.html

They only show it with a 5-way. No 3 mini-toggles if that's what you happen to have.

        Thanks guys, great links!

So it's the volume pot that should have the circuit board on the back. That means more has been changed than I originally thought.

I have a 5 way pickup selector lets me pick single coils of the humbuckers aswell as the usual selections found on the 3 way.

I'll pull the back plate off soon and have a look inside. No trem routing since it's a Kahler.

If I remember right it should be 1 N/h , 2 inside coils on both ,3N&B/h ,4 outside coils on both 5 B/h . The third pot might have been added most 86 Soloist only had V&T pots and some had JE1000 electronics .

            You might think that is how it would be wired, but it ain't What we have is 1 = n h, 2 = b h, 3 = out coils, 4 = in coils, 5 both h.

This has almost certianly been tampered with. Although I don't think that any pot holes (get it ?? :ROTF: ) have been added.

I think you have a factory-installed JE-1200 midboost and the JE-0005 Special 5-way switch. There are a lot of different ways they can be wired, but it seems like the way jtr described is the most common.

Diagram for the switch (lower right):

I think I am supposed to, but the guitar seems to have been harvested at some point.

I have put a 'wanted' post up. To be honest any of the active preamp setups would be nice, it doesn't have to be the original.

Now we have identified what it should be, it might be hard to get the correct setup components. I just want an active control setup to work correctly and each of them has their merits.

Don't know what you posted, but you're under 100 posts and a newbie, so if your post could be taken as a want-to-buy/sell type of post, you've been consored according to the rules of the JCF.

gotcha, cheers. I'll have to wait until I am allowed to ask for the bits to put my guitar back on the road then.

Cheers for all your responses. Big help.
