bass strings

i have a 4 string bass that im restringing and i want to tune it to C# , i was thinking should i buy a set of strings for a five string bass and use the higher gauge for the C# String if so why?

thats what most bass players do.

or get a 5 string bass and use a lighter gauge 5 string set (or get the rest of the band to tune to B)
