I've heard people say both good and bad things about keeping silica gel inside cases with guitars for a long time...so which is it? Silica gel or no if I'm keeping guitars in their cases for an extended period of time?

Yeah, maybe not the wood of the guitar, but probably humidity does affect the hardware of the guitar, I do keep a couple silica packs inside my KV-2's case, so far no problems, more than a year inside and no problems, and we got 90% humidity in PERU all year long.

If you don't use something like silica gel (for extended periods), then the metal will absorb excess moisture. Leads to oxidation = rust. I'd still want to keep checking the guitars monthly because even silica gel can only absorb so much moisture. The only solution to GAS is DEATH...

I assume Silica Gel sachets keep the guitar and case smelling new too. I know a guy who stores his guitars in cases and they stink because he doesn't use SG.Fuck ebay, fuck paypal

yes they do help keep the musty orod out as well. I have them in all my cases and have not had any issues or problems. I agree that its a good idea to check them from time to time and make sure everything is good...otherwise they seem to work perfectly for me.
