How are guitar necks inlaid?

I still can't figure out how they do the inlays on guitars... Like, how thick is the piece of abalone or MOP and how do they put that into a neck?

Anybody knows?

These days the fretboards are done mostly by CNC routing. The inlays are anywhere from .050 and up. The inlays are usually laser cut, then glued in to the fretboard and then levelled.
