They are there to 1) keep the clamp block from falling out and 2) to make sure you don't stick the string in too far.
As long as you a) don't back the clamp screw out too far outta the hole in the clamp block and b) you don't stick the string in so far it bottoms out on the baseplate, you don't nee the metal backing thingie.
I have purchased several used OFR's over the years and some times there are saddles missing the backing plate. (which I hate) I have taken the plates off rusty saddles and reused them. Since saddles can be expensive, I was wondering if you guess had any resolutions for this.
