Floyd Rose Upgrades

I was curious. I have the older SL2 that had a licensed Floyd in it. Now I'm also aware that the SL2H has the OFR in it. Beyond having the nut shelf modified to fit the OFR nut, would a OFR just drop into my guitar or would new posts need to be put in etc? Any redrilling???

If your older SL2 had a JT-590 in it, the OFR bolts will hang out over the JT-590 route. You won't be able to pull up the trem.
Get a Schaller trem instead. Or better yet, leave the JT-590 in there. It's the exact same trem as a Schaller... just has a different name stamped on it.

There is no need to replace the lock nut. Leave the original one on there unless you are changing hardware color or the current one is worn out.
As for the posts... leave 'em as well. They will work perfectly with an OFR.

Correct, the current LFR in the guitar is the JT580LP. If I replace this with an OFR, would I be able to do pull ups? I'm replacing because I suspect that the blades on the bridge plate are a bit worn and one of the posts are definately worn. The locking nut is stripped, I just feel like at this point, I could replace the whole set and get the guitar to work the way I want. I'm just curious at this point, what would be entailed beyond the modification to headstock where the nut sits.

Are Schaller floyds any good too or should I just stick with the OFR? I've read some interesting things about Ping FR, but have not actually talked to anyone, etc. that's used them.

An OFR will fit in there just fine and you will be able to do pull ups.

Final Question, I think...

What's the general oppinion on buying a used OFR? Are they as good as the new ones usually?

Are there any licensed manufactures that people also recommend?

as were the jackson trems
a schaller will drop right in
i prefer the schaller's as they are not as bright as the OFR's
OFR's had hardend baseplates
the Schaller's have a cast plate with hardend inserts

You're right, the OFR is made by Schaller. The Jackson JT-590 is a Schaller (same as the Floyd II), but not the JT-580.

ive read that Schallers and OFRs actually are slihgtly different...as in, the position of the saddles are slightly further back on the Schaller trem than the OFR (or Licensed OFR copy). and i notice that a lot of Schaller equipped guitars have the trems slightly more forward than an OFR, so wouldnt putting a Schaller on an OFR or OFR style guitar move the saddles back a bit?

Funny, I've noticed the opposite. Usually Schallers are just a bit cheaper than an OFR. I just checked Warmoth and the Schaller is $5 cheaper than an OFR. I'm probably gonna replace my JT580LP with a Schaller, due to the shorter locking bolts. With an OFR, you run the risk on some guitars that the locking bolts will be too long and extend beyond the route. It all depends on how far back you have to move the saddles when setting intonation. On some Jacksons this isn't a problem, but every guitar is different. YMMV
