Tuners - maintenance.

I haven't noticed any posts on here about sealed tuners, and the maintenance of such.

Plus, I've been wondering how other people like their tuners, tight, or loose. Personally I can't stand loose sloppy tuners that move if you so much as look at them funny. Whenever I buy a guitar and do a set-up, I always check the tuners, and tighten them if necessary. However, I don't like them too tight either. If they're too stiff, I assume it will wear them out quicker, plus it makes replacing string a real pain in the ass when you don't have a winder handy.

I have a nice old set of Schaller 3-a-side tuners that I put on my new new Aria to replace a set that had seen better days. Unfortunately, one of them seems to be too loose, and I can't seem to tighten it any more. Any clue as to what I could do?

Have you taken off the knob? Sometimes the bushing in between the knob and the shaft gets crushed (from overtightening and wear [img]graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] ) and you have to replace it, or you could just make a shim from a thin guitar pick with the same hole as the bushing and then when you're putting the knob back on just stack the bushing and the shim together and that should give you a bit more "tightening" area. I'm not sure all tuners are built this way so it may not sound right for your application.

just get a double locking trem and don't worry about how good or bad the tuners are.

Even with double locking trems the quality of the tuner DOES matter! Remember that the main tuning process takes place before the nut is locked down, so yes, the better tuners will save you a lot of time in tuning.

Dave, I think that's definitely the way to go. The bushing is most likely crushed. After all, these tuners are probably 25-30 years old.
