Speaker Recone

Has anyone had that done? The reason I am asking is I have pair of '50's 12in Jensens alnicos that need a recone. They could be killer speakers. Big voicecoils and whopper horseshoes.

There a sight for Celestion clones in the Amp & Effect section for way less than a recone job would cost.

You could probably find a kit or two on eBay and do it yourself. It should be fairly priced if the voice coil and mag are ok and all you need is the recone .

Throw them up on ebay, troll the phrase "50's Jensens" in the title line, and let them be some vintage tone-freak's headache and make a grand in the process...:ROTF:

These are real '50's speakers. Did you guys know that a magnet loses about 3% of its strength right off the bat and then stays that way forever?

They are one of those numbers. They are in the closet, but it would take a day to dig them out. Yeah, $50 sounds about right. Thanks

If you are sending them off, pack them well, then pack them a little more. And a little more for luck. Once they get booted round the courier's warehouse and get knocked off centre they will be scrap.*

If you can get the recone kits it's not difficult to do yourself, just take your time, make sure they send shims with the kit and don't be too ham-fisted with the soldering iron on the lead-in cables - be quick and precise, heat the correct part of the job, not the cable. If you have really cooked the old cones make sure you get all of the burnt coil out of the gap, keep it clean, and avoid swarf and shite getting in there. Scrape the old gasket and spider glue off well, just like doing an engine, the new glue/gasket will take better to a clean surface. And don't be too quick to thrape them afterwards, let the glue dry properly first.
Better still, let someone else do them!!

* (Technically you can de-gauss them , re-align , then magnetise them again, but I've never heard of anyone who has done it due to it being such a costly process. Cheaper to sling 'em and replace!)
