Actually there were two gain boost systems - one had the on/off switch, and the other had a third knob in the system to turn it on and off (and anywhere in between).
The JE2000 bass system can really make cleans sparkle or rumble, depending on how you set it, but it's usually a 3 knob system - Master Volume, Treble, and Bass hooked to either a pan pot or a pickup switch. I put one in a 2-hum guitar with a Jackson Special 5-way switch and got some nice semi-acoustic tones with it by splitting both hums and backing down the Treble.
