I have a lot of guitar cases and was wondering what some of you guys do. I put masking tape on a few of them. I don't like it at all. Masking tape leaves a gooey nasty film.

I've tried almost every method, including most listed above. Since I have too many guitars, I like labels that are big enough so I can print large letters to easily read from several feet away.
I noticed a few guitars I got that were rockstar owned had what looked like white medical tape on them. That got me thinking and I went to the first aide section of the local drug store. What I've found works the best is white durable cloth tape. It's kinda a plastized cloth tape, kinda a silk feel, usually can be found in a dispenser (like scotch tape type), 3/4" or 1" wide. I usually put down two strips, one over the other so it's nice and white, then use a black magic marker to label it.
This tape lasts a long time, sticks without becoming gooy later, and will come off when you want it to without leaving any goo.
The white background with black marker makes it easy to read vs. the blue painters tape or gray duct tape.
Here's a pic of the type of tape:

I use the Green automotive painting masking tape and a permanent marker. Works for me and no residue. The blue stuff as mentioned also works since it low tack. Gaffers or Duct tape does not work for me as it leaves residue as it ages.Tone is like Art: Your opinion is valid. Listen, learn, have fun, draw your own conclusions.

All my cases are different so I don't have to label anything
Since I only have one Les Paul, that one's easy to spot, as is the King V case and the War Angel case (the big white thing in the corner)
Then there's the Halford Warrior case (1990/91 WR Pro case), and the 7-string Warrior.
The NASL cases are easy to tell apart - one's a standard SKB-type and the other is a wood tolex-covered.
The Morton SKB-type case looks a lot cleaner than the one NASL SKB-type case, so it's easy to spot as well.
But yeah if I had a lot of the same guitars/identical cases, I'd look into a labeling system. Either one of those label-makers or some luggage-type tags.
You could get those cardboard/paper tags with the strings on them and tie them to the latch rings or handle.I want to depart this world the same way I arrived; screaming and covered in someone else's blood
