Really Odd Wiring Question...

Heres one for the electronics EXPERTS. I have a 4 conductor DiMarzio Tone Zone. I want to wire this like on a 3 way switch:

Bottom position: Bottom Coil (the coil facing the bridge)
Middle Position: Both Coils (Full Humbucking mode)
Top Position: Top Coil (Coil facing the bridge)

Is this possible to do?

You can't do this with just one switch. You need to be able to switch the pickup wire going to the volume pot AND the wire(s) that need to be grounded. You really need two switches for this. Even then it is not real straight forward either, if I am not mistaken.

IMHO it is not possible with a simple 3 Way switch like in a les Paul, because what it does is:
1 - connect Bridge pickup to output
2 - connect Bridge and Neck pickups to output
3 - connect Neck pickup to output

You could use the wiring above and replace Bridge and neck pickup by top and bottom coil. The problem is that the 2 coils need also to be connected in serial in the middle position and you have to connect the top coil to the output and the bottom coil to the ground.

This is what super switches are designed for, but I've only seen 5-way blade versions like the Jackson JE-0005, or this one:

Heres what I did:

A pickup has a start and finish wire. So I took the "start" wire of each coil on the pickup and put them on the pot along with the ground. Next I put each of the "finish" wire and put it on the switch, then ran the pickup from the pot to the middle position on the toggle and it has tested exactly how I want it.

This is a different kind of switch then the three way gibson-style pickup selector switch. This is an on/off/on switch. It won't work on a 3 way switch.

Edit: I was unaware of these kind of switches for guitars, but this is a good solution if you want to coil tap this way.

I also just noticed that Charvelrocker seems to have it all figured out. He must have the right kind of switch. I need to work on my reading comprehension

I just used a Tele Style 3 way. I think its out of phase though as in humbucking mode it sounds like crap. I'll need to test to see its due to the actual setup or if (like a normal phase problem) swapping a few wires around will fix it.

You can also do it if you order a "Petrucci" 3-way toggle switch from DiMarzio. I forget the model number offhand, but I ordered one from them awhile ago and had it put in my Carvin.
