  • somewhere in time tone

    hi,
somewhere in time by iron maiden is one of my fovaourite albums.
i really like the guitar tones and the atmosphere in the songs.
what kind of effects are they using ( a. smith especially ) ?

i want to try to imitate that sound as close as possible to the original one...

I think they were using those GK amps during that period, transistor amp washed in chorus.

      You'll need a guitar synthesizer.

That should give you a general idea of what to look for in your tone, but thats from the "modern era", and according to some interviews I have, Adrian and Dave had trimmed there rig down a fair amount. That listing for their pickups used is also a bit out of date; Adrian apparently use(d)s a DiMarzio Super Distortion and two DiMarzio Single Coils on his guitars now, and David use(d)s DiMarzio rail pickups as well.

I love Adrians tone in those albums as well... Can't wait to see the Early Days part 2 (maybe Middle Days) to see a Somewere on Tour concert.

I need to make an Iron Maiden tribute band!!!

no one beats H's tone on those 80's albums.
cuts through the mix like hot knife through butter, especially on his solos.
            fucking God-like.
the guitar players look damaged - they've been outcasts all their lives

              Those were the best solos!

+1 for a Maiden tribute band. There were some kids on youtube that were pretty good. I show my kids that video and say "What the F's your problem?"

toejam is right about the synth
i use a slight pitch shift into a chorus pedal with delay here and there
works pretty good at getting those synth sounds

spazzyone: i thought about doing the same thing.
pitch shift , chorus and a little delay.
i don`t want to deal with synths, too much to learn and program and that would also involve modifying my beloved jacksons.

anyway, the guitar tone in that record is so good.
spacious and mysterius, that`s how i describe it...

Yep. If you look really close on the wasted years video, you can see a couple of them. GK ML250s. Great amps, i used one for years.
Its a complete catastrophe. But Im a professional, I can rise above it. LOL
