Makes sense to me...and that's one reason I'm biased. Against, for the most
part. Most of my experience lies in neck repairs, and I shudder to think of
having to work on scalloped necks. As far as playabilty in that area, I'm in agreement with you.

I play a scalloped board and I had a YJM for long while, if you have typical huge Jackson frets then you will have a scalloped feel because you're rarely hitting the fretboard. The benefit for me is grabbing the 2 E strings with ease, especially the fat E string, you can grab it for a bend with any part of your finger that hits it. I don't know this for a fact but it seems to me that my Model 2 is more resonant/acoustic now, louder. If you spend some quality time on a scalloped guitar you'll find out the good and bad, I personally think they are great. The control of the individual notes is great as well, you can really manipulate them. There is a bit of a learning curve because you have to be more acurate when fretting a string, I found that with arpeggios, if you miss a little bit you slip off and go under.

The new Malmsteen has scallops that look like ditches, but that is still very nice.

You're right in that it sort of doesn't make sense- but a scalloped neck DEFINITELY feels very different from a standard fretboard. It's smoother and feels slinkier- and is easier to grab notes in the higher frets. The only way to really understand is to check one out- you may or may not care for it.

I've played one and like it (and in fact have a scallopped Warmoth neck coming to me soon) but to me it seems to make less and less difference as I get to the higher frets.
