Another question I have about replacing pups: Is it common practice to
just cut the wires of the existing pups and join the new ones in with a
little solder and shrink wrap? Seems like this would be easier than
unsoldering/resoldering the pot spots.

Prolly doesn't look nearly as clean, though.

it's common practice if you're lazy. it's always best to desolder the previous wires.

yep, I agree. Desolder the old connection and re-solder it.

Half-assed wiring is a real pet peeve of mine; if you're gonna do it then do it right.

If it's an older guitar, just throw in new pots while you're at it. Save the old ones if the axe has any vintage value, but save the hassle of re-doing it later as well.

Good idea! And while your at it, throw in a set of RS Superpots. You will glad you did. Same goes for the Caps, if your using them.

i'll never do that again.

even if you never turn down your tone knob, keep it in the circuit! you'll be glad you did for many reason... reasons that i cannot explain properly or scientifically, but... you'll have less feedback when you mute your strings without turning the volume knob off. there is information out there that will give you a better understaining of all the impedence issues with different accessories in the circuit. you just have to search for them. bottom line. most every guitar has a tone knob in there for a reason. even if you always leave it at 10. just by being there it serves a purpose sonically.

I could never get all of the solder off of the volume pot, so I usually just try to melt the new one on top of the mass. Lazy? Perhaps. Convenient? Definitely.

The glass is neither half full, nor is it half empty. The glass is simply too large for the amount of water it's holding.

Depending on the guitar, I've sometime I re-wire and sometimes I cut and tap. If the control cavity is filled with wires and looks to be more trouble than it's worth, then I'll cut/tap.
