Pickup question

With everything else being the same as far as body wood, bolt-on neck, and hardware, is there a big difference in tone as far as direct mounted pickups vs. pickup-ring mounted pickups in both clean and high gain settings? Or is the tone difference negligible? Thank you in advance.

I think it's matter of aesthetics more than anything and the tone difference is negligible. Just my $.02

Cool. Thank you very much for all your help and input. Much appreciated. Now it's just a matter of deciding between an Ibanez RG2550Z or RG2570Z. The "Z" being the new Ibanez Edge Zero trem.

I've never been able to tell much difference, but EVH swears it's better being direct mounted.

Oh, if it's an Ibanez you are getting, it doesn't matter how you mount the pickups
