Rust happens when the metal, moisture and air interact. Ergo the hairdryer.

I just put it back together and I even managed to not have parts left out!
Here are some pictures of the result, at least the rust is not as visible anymore, and I guess it's well protected for a while against further rust. It still is a bit greasy however, but I guess that won't hurt. Thanks for the comments
