I've tried several different pickups in my basswood guitars . . .
JB - I have JBs in three of my basswood Jacksons. It's not my favorite pickup, but it sounds very balanced in basswood, with less of the shrill treble I noticed when using it in alder. Great for leads, but the palm mutes aren't quite what I'd like.
Screamin' Demon - Similar in many ways to the JB. Another good pickup for leads, more so for rock or `80s metal than the more "extreme" varieties.
Invader - Surprisingly well-balanced in basswood. If you need a very heavy/brutal/whatever tone without tuning down, an Invader in basswood will do it. I record all my rhythm tracks with an Invader-equipped basswood Dinky.
PAF Pro - Not too far from a JB or Screamin' Demon when used with a high-gain amp, but it has a more vocal tone overall.
Steve's Special - Probably my favorite pickup for a basswood guitar, although I don't have one at the moment. As with the PAF Pro, leads have a vocal quality, and it's quite good for rhythm work too.
