Home Depot and Lowes have dowels from 1/8" up to 1" in 1/8" increments extremely cheap. You can also choose poplar or oak. They come in 3 foot lengths so you will have to cut it to size. Might as well pickup some TiteBond wood glue while you are there.

I've never used toothpicks, but I'd venture a guess and say that three will be sufficient. Put a little glue on your finger, rub the glue on the toothpicks, then insert them into the hole. Push the toothpicks until they wedge in the hole, then either break them off flush with the body or use an Exacto knife and trim the excess toothpicks from the body. Let the repair sit overnight, then re-insert your strap screw.
If you decide on the match stick, follow the above procedures. One other thing you can use is a golf tee. It's really simple, so get busy.
