  • EMG's in SL1

    Hi All

Thinking of replacing my Seymours with EMG's 81/SA/SA. The neck pickup on my SL1 is turning into mush so I figure now is the time. My question is:

Has anybody here tried this combo? I have never heard an SA before and thats the only thing holding me back. I'd love to get a sound similar to an EMG 85. My Wartribe has a 85 in the neck and it is sweeeeet!!!

    Thanks
    Cheers!

Ummm, the SA is a single coil, the 85 is a humbucker.

You're not going to get the SA to sound like the 85.

It won't sound bad, but it will not have a full humbucker tone.
I want to depart this world the same way I arrived; screaming and covered in someone else's blood

Yeah, I realize that but I'm looking for the next best thing.

        I put an 81 in the bridge and an SA in the neck of this Soloist;

I left the Jackson middle single coil pickup in there but not wired up. I lowered it all the way so my pick doesn't hit it.
The SA sounds really full with distortion and blusey, but on a clean setting it's super sweet and creamy. In the middle position, (both on) they also sound amazing. The 81 sounds huge in the bridge. These pickups respond really well with different amp tones.

I would recommend this mod to anyone. These EMGs fit all the styles of music I play. I've put them in 3 guitars over the years, and they're still in them!

I had 81/SA/SA in my US SL1; despite what people say about active EMGs making all guitars sound the same they sounded much better than the 81/85 set I had in a Gibson SG (Gothic to be fair). The SL1 now has a Bareknuckle miracle man and pair of trilogy suites (on recommendation from this forums) which gives a somewhat more conventional hot strat sound.

the only pup that is a single coil size that will resemble the 85 is the dimarzio tone zone S

it wont have the output of the 85 but will have that kind of tone
FWIW i think the 85 is too dark for the neck spot and i had mush probs with mine
I prefer the 60 or the S series from EMG
If it's not a CHARVEL then i dont want to play it,look at it or even fuckin THINK about it!

you should do a emg 81 in the bridge then a sa in the middle and a emg s in the neck or a emg 81tw in the bridge!

You could also go with the 85-SA-SA.

                      Thanks all.

I think I'll order the 81/SA/SA combo. I'll let you know how she sounds.

                      Cheers!

I would go with an 85 and not an 81

Probably worth listening to jtr and getting the 89/SA/SA then...the 89 is a 85 with a coil tap in case you weren't aware
