Hey guys, im new here and was looking at getting a KE3 soon with some bells and whistles (Schaller FR, new pups etc) and was wondering if the stock pot is any good or if i should replace that?
the stock pot is ok(ish), if you go with emg's you'll need to replace the pot. If you go with a serious passive, I'd replace it with a cts.
I've got 3 ke3's, 2 with emg 81/85 and one with a dimebucker(bridge) DD(neck).
What type of pick ups are you thinking about?
PS - HaHa, you may want to do an introductory thread, let everyone know who you are and your interests in J/C guitars(other brands as well).
Welcome home

Introductory threads are not necessary. Jump in and start having fun, we'll get to the rest when/if the time comes.
As for the pot, yes, Ohms is Ohms, but quality of material is not the same across the board. Jackson skimps on the easily-replaceable stuff like hardware and electronics so they can put more into the stuff that matters - wood and construction quality.
Replace the pot and the switch with the good stuff and you'll have a higher-quality high-quality import

I understand where you're coming from Newc, but to me it depends what you're doing with the guitar. If you're in a band, playing live regularly at high volumes, then it could well be worth upgrading all the electronics in a KE3 when you do the pickups.
If you're just a bedroom player, or do the odd jam or whatever when you can find other musicians near enough (like me) then I don't think the difference in tone really warrants shelling out on switches and stuff, unless the ones already in the guitar are damaged.
It's not so much a question of tone as reliability. Everything goes downhill with age, it's just that good stuff has farther to go than crap does. With daily use, even in a bedroom for a few hours, those cheap knobs and switches will be problematic in a month.
Plus, you don't want to be caught off guard with a jam invite only to have to bow out because your cheap pots or switches are on the fritz. Worst of all, going to the jam and THEN your gear has issues once you get there. Throws a bad light on the brand.

The guy that posted this has never replied so I guess he lost interest.
But in response to your post, you must be having a laugh. The stock knobs and switches on import Jacksons will be "problematic in a month"? Seriously? A month?
I've had my RR3 for years with no issues. The Concept JDR 94 I got recently seems to have stock electronics and it works perfectly after 15 YEARS never mind one month!
Cheaper gear might have issues but come on, even the cheapest pots on ebay are going to last years not a month. I always assumed people recommended new pots/switches for reasons of tone, not because they'd break after a month.

I was planning on a Dimarzio X2N in the bridge and an Evolution in the neck. I was more or less just looking on the reliability side of them. I figured i'd switch the pot since its not too much more expensive.
