how to safely put on / remove floyd springs?

What's the issue?
Like others have said... Loosen the strings and then swap the springs with your fingers. No tools needed.
If you want to do it while the springs are under tension, shove a wood block behind the sustain block to keep the trem from nosediving and break out the needle nose pliers. Takes like two seconds.

Small flat Snap-on screwdriver is what I use.

Connect the spring to the block and then insert the screwdriver slightly into the hole of the spring and use some leverage to get it over the claw.

Try it and you will be surprised at how easily it works.
