Tuning peg "O" ring

I was changing strings on my bass and the off white ring in the groove at the bottom of the peg broke in half. Has anybody else had this happen and is it a critical issue?.......thanks in advance.

I had it happen some years back on a Dinky I used to own. No big deal at all, just seemed like a cosmetic issue.
