...the tailpiece be from the bridge? Does it matter? Is there a standard distance which allows some sort of tonal maximization?

depends
if it is a tune-a-matic type, there is leeway since you can adjust the height of the tailpiece. The important part is the angle that the strings take over the bridge. If there is not enough down pressure, your strings will pop off the saddle. If there is too much, the saddle acts like a knife that will cause string breakage prematurely.
