Where to find circuit board material?

Ok, I've got some wierd ideas that are simple to wire up (switches and pots only, no ICs or anything....maybe a resistor or two, who knows), and I've looked around for info on making your own circuit boards but all I've found so far are retailers selling a nifty-looking $1500+ machine that will etch and print your boards, long-dead discussion threads about various "building my own footpedals nightmare" that doesn't include links to material resources, and stuff like that.

I'm looking for where to find the actual blank board material. That's all I need.

When I got into pedal building I got all my stuff off the shelf at redio shack. I used turret boards, but I think they have the stuff for tracing and etching circuit board. Check the DIY pedal forums.

I used to find blank boards at electronic stores. When I first started building amps (1990), there wasn't an internet telling you to use turret boards or PTP wiring, so I made them etching boards. I'd draw up the circuit on graph paper, using the components to judge the spacing. Then I'd draw it with etch resist paint, and then etch the board. I never had any issues.

Looking at Radio Shack.com now.

Turret and breadboards are too big. I need small stuff, like guitar control cavity-sized - small enough to fit an Ontario or SD route, or smaller - maybe 2" long by 1/2" wide. Cut-to-size stuff is ok, whether solid or pre-holed, but it can't be pre-wired/pre-tracered.

I'm looking for standard fiberglass/plastic/whatever they're made of, and some sort of hand-operated carving/etching tool and a hand-powered punch to make my own holes when necessary.

For a guitar pre-amp get the pre-drilled stuff. I made those before making amps.

Here's a tip - look up the LM386. It makes a great guitar preamp with minimal parts. It has a low output impedance so that it drives the signal well through many pedals / long cables. Perfect for those muddy J200 single coils.

Actually the stuff I have in mind is all passive, and mostly will deal with pickups and switches. Something similar to the Duncan TripleShot but far beyond crazy

Breadboard can be cut to size and so can veroboard and others. You can do point to point on boards with holes, or etch your own with an etchant pen, a jug/vat/bath and some etch salts.
