Back in the 70's they made everything out of brass because they thought that mass=sustain.

the tone and sustain are going to chance, but slightly. I'd say that if you play with a bunch of overdrive, you'll not notice the difference ..
What you WOULD notice however is the waaay improved access to the upper frets ..
There's a luthier in Nashville Tn who offers this as a standard service, at a price that surprised me.
