step 1: #0000 steel wool. rub up and down the board with the grain (NOT SIDE TO SIDE!). removes gunk and makes the frets shine. (can also be used lightly on the back of the neck to remove grit from the finish, will not hurt neck if done lightly with the grain.)
step 2: clean fretboard with Premium Zippo Lighter Fluid (or Naptha). put a small amount on a clean cloth. this stuff dries quickly and removes impurities from the fretboard to the cloth so change positions of the cloth often during this step. then wipe fretboard down with a clean dry cloth
step 3: oil the fretboard with "Fretdoctor". this can be found online at http://www.beafifer.com/boredoctor.htm. slap some oil on there, spread it around evenly. give it a few minutes and wipe the excess off with a clean dry cloth.
your fretboard will look better than brand new.

Be sure to cover your pickups up if your going to be using steel wool. You don't want pieces of steel wool getting into your magnetic pickups.I feel my soul go cold... only the dead are smiling.
