What is the best way to lower the action on an acoustic?

Acoustics generally have high action for less fret buzz, more sustain, and improved tonal response over more frets. Since they don't have the benefit of a solid body and the resonant sustain it provides, it relies more on a clear string path, which requires higher action, even with a pickup.
