Here are some pix of the second '71 prototype. The "First Five" batch of '71s will begin soon; get in touch for details and reserve yours! All kinds of options await you!
This '71 is what I refer to as "dressed up;" it has a mahogany body and neck, flame maple cap (shot honeyburst in a pattern that really accentuates the body shape), ebony fretboard with MOP slash inlays, stainless steel jumbo frets, ivoroid binding around the body and neck, and tortoiseshell side block markers. Pickups are from Habanero Guitar Parts (the fine folks at GJ2); the bridge pickup is a model that I'm testing out it's between the classic and the spicy, and sounds killer! The neck pickup is a Habanero Classic. Bridge is a tone pros wraparound. And yeah, I'll get around to making some truss rod covers soon.
The first prototype is in "stripped down" mode; no figured top or binding, but the body is black limba, and the neck is 3pc black limba, so I guess you could say it's not all that stripped down! The stripped down version allows for body bevels, which is nice. Rosewood board, stainless steel jumbo frets, Gotoh hardware, and Habanero Classic pickups complete the guitar.
...and while we're at it, here's a sneak peek at two of the tops for future '71s. Quilted maple with the angel step pattern is pretty hard to find, so when I find a source, I hoard as much of it as I can. See how the grain moves in a chevron pattern? That occurs when a maple tree twists as it grows (as if it's a towel being wrung out). If you liked the purple swamp ash catfish, it's the same kind of grain pattern. Unreal.
Stay tuned, as the announcement and pre-order will happen in the next few weeks.
