    // on soapbox

For many years the Jackson/Charvel Forum has served many purposes for me. Initially, it was a place where I could do some research on the Jackson and Charvel items I owned and wanted. It later helped me determine what was real and what wasn't in the Jackson Charvel world. It then evolved into a place to waste some time and discover online (and later real life) friendships that continue to this day. The chance to network with many folks with like-minded tastes in guitars (and some of the folks who work to build and market them) is invaluable to me.

Despite those positive attributes, there have been some negatives. I'll forego many of the things that personally bother me to focus on one specific issue that recently reared it's ugly head. I received a message from a relatively inactive member of this forum. The member in question comes out of nowhere asking if I have guitars to sell. I told this person that if I had guitars to sell, I would have posted them in the Classifieds or on eBay. This prompted a response of this member first bragging about what guitars they had, then an attempted insult to me.

Now, maybe this will look negative on me, but at this point I don't care. IF this forum has devolved to the point where being a community is no longer a priority then then I really don't want to be a part of it anymore. I've made my connections beyond this forum and I cherish those connections. That said, I have always detested any overt solicitation to buy a guitar from someone who makes no mention of selling. I find it to be extremely rude and for all intents and purposes... Spam.

I know my view isn't shared by everyone on this forum and some of you will respond telling me to lighen up. However, when someone blindly messages me, I'm definitely going to respond. So here it is. The "relatively inactive member" may have blocked me from replying to his message, but he cannot block me from saying my peace. I know, this may be a little extreme, but I am tired of spam. I fought it here when I was an Admin, I fight it every day when I open my e-mail. Rarely do I get a chance to publicly respond to it.

I agree. I just had the opposite happen. I just got a pm from a person who signed up only to try to peddle his guitar to me. His one and only post was saying he pmed me in a thread. I didnt respond, nor will I. It was a little irritating to me. No different in my opinion than an unsolicited sales call. Yeah, sure Im in the market for the guitar he was peddling, but not from a random person through a forum Im not a part of(gearnet or something to that effect).

Twitch, I had that happen twice for me, and both times turned into an amazing deal for me.
One person was extremely well known on another forum, so the deal felt safe to me.
The other had no references to speak of at all, but was willing to ship first, so again, I felt safe.
Of course, both of those were in response to for sale/for trade threads that I had up, so were not unsolicited...just not from established JCF members.

However, in a situation like Tekky's, I would feel the other way around.
It's one thing if you post up pics of a guitar and someone contacts you and says "if you ever want to sell that, let me know."
It another thing altogether to get contacted just to bait and see if you got something to sell.
That's just rude and inconsiderate, and I would feel just like Tekky does.

There's morons wherever you go though, so don't let those select few "bad apples" make you leave the orchard.
We want to keep the good members around.

Yeah I dunno, I've only ever received 2 or 3 unsolicited offers to buy my guits. Assuming there isn't a lowball insulting dollar offer attached, it really is a complement. I doubt in this economy anybody is getting so many of these that it's really a problem (no offense). Unsolicited offers trying to sell though, those are pretty lame.

I agree with Axewielder. I don't mind if I get PM's asking me if I want to sell any of my equipment. That's just me, though.

I hate it too, but what i hate even more is when someone wants to know how much you what for something else in the picture that's not for sale..

I'd be okay with the initial PM but once I let it be known that I don't sell guitars, I'd expect the PM's to essentially end there. If they didn't or took an annoying turn, I would just ignore said person.

If this is guitar symphony then apparently the user has been banned for violating the rules

That sucks Todd. As a community..we are friends and stick together. Your problem with a inactive tool is our problem. We don't need that kind of douchery here. You're family..don't let 'em win.

                      Take Care,

BTW I deleted my FB accnt. Hard to find time for this place.

More than anything Bill, the unsolicited buyers thing is a pet-peeve of mine. Since I can't do anything on an administrative capacity, starting a thread to bitch about it is the next best thing. It gets my thoughts out there and lets me know if I have anyone who agrees with me or whether I'm just being an oversensitive jerk. (I'm probably somewhere in the middle)

While my participation may have greatly diminished, I feel it has come somewhat full circle. I come here for some research and to see what's going on with the Jackson/Charvel world. I don't think I'm going anywhere as of yet.

By the sounds and looks of things Bill, you may have jumped off the Facebook ship before it sinks.

Facebook is going down? I am not a facebooker, so I have NO idea what goes on with it. is it because of costs? or has it run its course and something new is "in" now?

They are making unpopular changes to Facebook. I'm still on it, but I have also opened my Google+ account and looking into my Yahoo! and MySpace profiles to see if things have improved.

A person with one post PM'd me and wanted to buy a neck I had mentioned in another member's WTB thread. He couldn't understand what he was doing was against the rules. There are a lot of different circumstances regarding this sort of thing. I contacted a member on a different forum about a neck he posted. He initially refused to sell and then two weeks later he contacted me and gave me a nice deal on it--lol. You never know how someone might react. I think low ball offers are the most offensive...
