  • A JCF Member who needs to stand up and take a bow

Many moons ago I obtained an old refinned San Dimas RR in trade from a regular here. I inquired about any repairs and was told that there was only one drop-fill on the fretboard but no other repairs. In inqured about the refin and learned that the member who was offering the RR had done the refin himself.

When the guitar arrived I didn't really care for it, it was quite different from my other San Dimas RR. In and of itself that's not unusual since everything was custom back then, but for some reason this one just didn't appeal to me as much as any other San Dimas RRs I'd played or owned in the past so I turned it around quickly in another trade to another JCF regular.

Recently I was chatting with the guitar's current owner and he mentioned that he'd stripped the guitar down and was working on an old headstock repair (and that the drop-fill repair on the fretboard had fallen out). The headstock repair was, oddly, never mentioned to me by the member who sent me the guitar. I assume he'd be aware of the headstock repair as he did strip & refin the guitar. Thanks "bro" I really appreciate it.

Would this mystery JCF member like to take a bow here, you've certainly earned it.

If I have the wrong guy, I apologize. If this about RR0670, then here we go:

Back a few years ago I bought a San Dimas era Rhoads student model from yogadork. It was oversprayed black in a shellac based finish. I stripped the guitar down to a white finish with alcohol. I left the white as it looked flat and I saw it as a waste to scrap a good base just to apply a new one. I fixed up the tips, sprayed some touch up white, then painted the guitar the rest of the way. I never repaired the headstock, nor did I see a repair to the headstock. If I did, I would have told you. Now as far as what was under that white finish, I have no idea.

Here is a pic I found backed up I sent to yogadork while I was working on it. I had more, but that was two computers ago and all I have is what I actually backed up to CD in the form of my website pics. Again, I may not be the right guy, but the SD Rhoads refinished by me with a filled fretboard matches a guitar I had.

Jim - Thanks for the input on this, RR 0670 is indeed the guitar to which I was referring. I'm glad it wasn't you who passed this one while knowingly concealing the fact that it had a headstock repair. I hope the previous owner(s) of this one will contribute to this thread in hopes that we can track this back to the person responsible.

Well, when I got it from yoga, the black refin was OLD. The pic you see above you can make out a wear/chipped spot between the pickups. We talked about what color it possibly was and he didn't know. We suspected the blue in the cavities was, so I left that there (you can still see it in the cleaned down pic), so I painted it that color. I think Rob Witte said it was white afterwards.

I have the guitar now. I stripped it down completely to get a refin done. The headstock damage is not that bad so I don't want anyone to get all upset about this. The break is by the 6th string. The corner was busted off. Almost. It looks like the black headstock veneer kept it from coming off completely or the veneer was replaced (which I doubt). It was a fairly clean break and looks like it's not a problem to me. The fingerboard repair didn't hold up at all and is sort of what prompted me to just refinish it (also I never liked the color much).

Anyhow, there's no need for anyone to get bent out of shape over this. I'm not worried about it.
I want REAL change. I want dead bodies littering the capitol.
