I'll second that.. this has a broad audience, but alot of guys are looking for deals-myself included. I'll pay a fair price for something I want tho. There are ppl here who are a very select group with very eclectic tastes as well as new guys or lurkers who will bake up to ask a half dozen half baked questions. "will it make me sound like X metal guitarist?"

If you want to sell something quick for a lower price than on eBay, you may have a margin of success. Your chances are likely to be much greater on eBay with a price marked up accordingly for the fees compensation.

You pay for that potential exposure to a broader audience tho.

Another personal beef with eBay is the potential of the item to be much less than described. Sometimes that works out great to a savvy buyers advantage. But, sometimes it leads to dissapointment.
Like buying an amp only to have revealed a blown output trans or no tubes, bad tubes, or some bs as such or a repaired crack in the fretboard, headstock etc..

That is one thing about the classifieds here that you will only run into on occasion and that has been pretty much narrowed down further with the 100 post acceptance into that section.

That is something that makes buying an item here a more personalized thing,... you have a semi established idea about a person and the gear they have etc..as well as their ability to be fair and have a rep for this or that.
I approach a deal here much like I would if I were to cross eBay with a longtime acquintance that I knew for years or knew by reputation and maybe had or had not dealt with before.

My issue , and the reason this came about, because of a recent situation. I had an item that the person repeatedly Pm'ed about. He said "sell it to me". Its not that big of a deal, a PC1, but I liked it , so I said no.

Finally, he asks if I want to sell it, I say, "yeah, fine". AND I price it at $1500 shipped. Thats for essentially a brand new PC1, so its not like I am trying to rape the guy. Besides, HE CONTACTED ME. I didnt put it up for sale. I dont need to sell a freakin PC1, but I thought, what the hell....

The response? "Ok, cool let me look at my other options, lots of Chlorines popping up lately, are you firm?"

Its like, wait a fuckin minute! You bug the piss out of me for essentially 6 months, only to tell me "let me look around"???

How about this. Fuck you, I wouldnt sell it to you if it was the last one on earth and you offered $10k for it.

This has happened before, and its always a dreamer, but you dont know they are a dreamer until they buckeye you and make you waste your time.

        It should go like this.

Shawn: Hey Tim, you want_______? $_________

Tim: "Ship it". (this is how 2 or 3 of my deals with Tim have gone)

        Or

"Cool, love to have it, can I have a day to decide?

Can you have a day to decide? Absolutely. With pleasure. Take 2 if you want. BUT, dont make me have to fucking pm you, email you and call you to get some sort of answer (you know who you are).

I have about 15 guys that if I ever sold something, I would ship the guitar not even knowing when I was going to get paid. Because I know I will.

        Its all about respect.

Y aknow what, that is one of the boons about selling here. They are a "bro", so you try to be cool and answer questions that you would just blow off if some ebay idiot asked.

But THEN, it turns out that we are plenty stocked with idiots as well.

I just feel like, I would NEVER bother you (Unless it were for pics, etc...) If I wasnt sure I was interested. If you want to tell me how cool it is, and have me explain to you what the setup is like (WTF?), how it sounds, how it plays, will 11's work on it, Blah Blah Fukkin Blah then find some other asshat, and THEN, when you decide to buy one, let me know.

There is enough resources on just this board alone that you dont need me to do a presentation on it.

Very, very well said - this whole post.

I would be furious if somebody came to me to buy, agreed on a price, then said they wanted to think about it when we had a deal. I mean, shit happens, so if your kid needs an iron lung or something, sure - but to get what you asked for then waffle? F U C K Y O U. I'd out them, so you're being cooler than I would.

I've had one "bad" deal here, ever, so I guess I'm lucky. And it wasn't really bad, some dude had a pedal for sale for $X dollars, I said I'd take it did he want paypal, and he had the balls to reply "I've changed my mind - I can get a lot more for it on ebay."

Sure you can, douchebag, BUT YOU FUCKING LISTED IT HERE, AND NAMED YOUR PRICE, AND I SAID I'D PAY THE FUCKING PRICE YOU ASKED FOR.

Other than that one time that I can think of, all great. Wouldn't hesitate to ship a guitar to a lot of people here to try on, because I know they'd either pay or take care of it and send it back like they got it.

And while I'm at it, I've never bought anything you've listed Shawn, but they have always been great pics of great guitars at what seemed like damn reasonable prices.

So I'm sorry that happened. What a dickhead.

            Keith

EDIT: Asshat? Do a presentation? Man, you're on a roll. You're freaking funny when you're pissed, if I may say so.

Wow...sounds eerily similar to an e-mail I got on Friday from someone inquiring about my chlorine pc1.

I agree regarding how deals are conducted on the JCF, a part it should be in part about respect. How respect is shown or perceived..for one member, may be a different issue for another. There is a broad audience here.
Obviously, you have a beef, and sounds justified. You can or can not chose to sell it. I'm sorry it sours your experience here, but again, this is the internet and this is a public forum. You may like to think it is a 'club', but it is only to a degree, especially now in 2006-2007..alot of us joined 5 years ago during the major revision at that time. There is also alot of people who have come on since then..and they may not have posted alot but do meet the requirement.
I very rarely sell anything on here.. it will more often than not sell for a fair price on eBay.
Not everybody here will pay or buy a 1500 bolt on.
So why did they pm you and bug you etc..?
They obviously do like the guitar, but not enough to buy it for the price you offered. If they had offered you a lowball price.. would you have been any less pissed.. no, probably more but the result would still be the same.

This is why for outright classifieds postings for sales..prices have to be listed with the item in the ad.

Obviously, the person thought you were negotiable or willing to negotiate for a sale if it was finally offered. Not everyone conducts business the same way, they may not be able to or affordability may be an issue.

In this instance, they should step up and offer an apology...but again, this is the internet, one can be very inpersonal and indifferent about honor or ethics and repuatation, or about wasting your time.

I think I am coming off as more pissed than I actually am. I am not upset in the least. I dont need therapy on this situation. I am just saying this. If youre not ready to buy someones guitar, dont ask to buy it.

Common sense, people. Tire kickers, dreamers and looky loos dont need to be PM'ing people asking them to sell a guitar.

I only list stuff for sale here on rare occasions. I will list them here out of respect for the members. I would hate for someone to say, "Hey, he's selling that ________ and didn't offer it here first." I recently listed my WR1 here for X amount. I said I ship in the 48 states only. I got ZERO pm's or offers from amyone here....except a member in Canada. He made an acceptable offer, but I just didn't want any hassle with customs and whatnot.

Sold it on ebay for 25 bucks less than my original asking price. I would have loved for a member here to have it, but what can ya do?

Yeah, the amount of tire kicking & low-balling here is discouraging. The routine that REALLY rubs me the wrong way is when someone says "Yeah, I'll definitely take it. We have a deal. Just give me a couple of days to move some other gear / wait for payday / whatever." ...Tick tock, tick tock. Nothing heard from them ever again.

I mean, WTF. It's bad enough to back out of the deal. But at least have the common decency to freakin' tell the seller that. Otherwise, they're waiting around on your sorry @ss, and don't have the opportunity to move on and sell to someone else.

I consider myself lucky in that I rarely sell guitars, and deal with this pretty infrequently. That said, when I have bought/sold here, almost all of the experiences have been very cool with good bros. It's just wading through the loo-loos to get there that's tiresome.

Yep, been there a bunch of times as well. It would be mostly OK if they'd just shoot me a PM within a reasonable amount of time and let me know that they won't be taking the item. Almost never happens though, most of the time I give folks here a loooong time them PM them. The reply is usually something along the lines of, "Oh you haven't sold that yet?" Fuck no I haven't you jackass I was holding it for you just like you asked me to.
