As has been stated, we'll never know how it really happened, but like most things in life, the most obvious answer is usually the right one.
+1. IMHO the only real question here is who is responsible?

In all seriousness, though, I actaully gave the damage in shipping theory some good thought. There were no chips, no debris, and yes, that could have easily been done outside the box. For the wing tips, hold it by the neck and drag it or bang it on cement. For the headstock, hold it by the wings and smack it face down. In any case, this isn't guitar forensics (a nod to Mike ) and it really doesn't matter now that the damage is done. It's just friggin sad as hell to see this happen at all........

Well, it matters in the sense that it's one thing - bad enough - if that happened in shipping. That puts the Fedex goons in the doghouse, but they don't know any better.

If it got broken on purpose out of ire over the dealings, that would be an entirely different story, and in any group of guitarists much less the JCF and THESE guitars, that would be sacrilege.

But we will never know the answer to that, and maybe it's better to mourn the guitar than to dwell on what we DON'T know.

BTW, I have no doubt Mark can restore that guitar to a nice playable axe, but the tone will be forever changed. Whether he still wants to after reading these newer posts is another story. What I would truly hate to see is that guitar rebuilt, then sold as if it were an intact one.

This is the point I was feebly trying to make......it just kills me..

                    • I have another theory as to what happened to the guitar. Pat chimed in and well he seems convincing .

I think Ians wife coulda busted it up. If she hated him buying guitars that bad maybe she went postal on it after discovering it? Just a thought

                      • If well step back from the emotive 'damaging a rare and beautiful instrument' issue for a second:- Ultimately, I can't see what either Pat or Ian has to gain by wrecking the guitar:

                        - If Ian broke the guitar, that's helluva risk, cos Pat could have taken pics of it packed for shipping and being collected. That would have just left him with a wrecked guitar which he's paid for....

                        - If Pat broke the guitar out of spite, then that could have just landed him in trouble from the start as the FedEx guys or the police could have checked it prior to collection.

Even so, I guess neither of the above are impossible, and I've never seen that level of damage from shipping....

Popular is not the same as good

The only way IMO that thing was damaged in shipping is if it fell out of a plane or a truck on the highway.
Not sure how the tips would be all banged up and all that damage to the headstock and busted strings if it was in the case even if the latches were left open. It only has so much room to move around while inside that box. Alos fed ex will not ship the guitar if it lloks to them that the packaging is inadequate

                          • yard Dawg has a definite possiblilty, i was in a marriage that was filled with anger at my hobby, but I never snuck a guitar by anyone, i just said ship it fed ex. sat. delivery, just get it here. I was in the doghouse already for everything else I had done ,real or imagined, so i bought whatever I wanted.
But it is not out of the question at all.

Dr Phil, If you knew me, you'd know that I've never been short of words, and I've always spoken my mind. I have absolutely no problem with posting what I feel , how I feel, etc. I have never shied away from posting details, rants, calling a spade a spade, etc so this is nothing out of the norm for me. This issue is certainly not any different from any previosu tangents.

Imagine for a moment, you walking into a forum you haven't been in a year or more, and seeing numerous pages of the posts above? And how does that make "you" feel Dr Phil?

                              Still don't get it?

Since we're all on the conspiracy theory trip. The only way that thing was trashed in shipping is if the guitar actually came out of the box/case at some point.

And Yard Dawg, you raise a few interesting points, but I can tell you this in my defense, I was on the phone with Officer Cates ( at the same time ) when FedEx eventually came to pick this up and told "him" he could come get the guitar anytime, since I was being threatened with being arrested at the time, if I didn't ship an item I was paid for... Officer Cates is the one that gave me/FedEx the address that the guitar was to be shipped to, this was on SPEAKERPHONE in my driveway.

                              • Oh yeah...and how rude of me. Hey Pat...I'm Dave. Nice to meetcha!
You sound like me..stating whats on your mind, my close friends and loved ones often refer to it as diareaha of the mouth I say whatever I want when I want with no remorse....dont like kissing ass and never hold back saying something because its not "right" Not many people do that and I respect the fact that you do. We should start a club or something :ROTF: Anyway my question has always been if this was shipping damage why was there never a claim filed? You have answered that and stated that Ian had to because it was his acct....so my question is still...why was a claim never filed? Also were the police notified of the damage ? Anyway, good luck and why not stick around here? You might add some spice to the place
