  • Car audio help needed. SD card???? 1.5 DIN size???

My new (used) truck has the factory deck, and I'd like to replace it with something a little more contemporary, that plays more modern formats. The stereo is 1.5 DIN size like most Dodge/Chrysler, and GM cars used to be. However, I'd be willing to live with a single DIN sized unit with an adapter kit, if I can find the right unit. Ideally, I'd like a unit that accepts SD cards. I've figured out that in MP3 Format, an 8GB SD card can hold around 80-100 albums worth of music. A 32 GB card can hold up to 400 albums worth of music. I like the idea of having my entire music collection on a few tiny SD cards. So, I'm wondering if such a unit actually exists.

Any and all advice is welcome.

By the way, I don't want to spend an arm and a leg. It's just for my truck. I'd like to spend no more than $200.

Generally the Pyle brand is low budget obviously, but, for that price on that unit, I would give it a shot.

Do you have an iPod or mp3 player? May want to consider a stereo with auxilary inputs.

I use a JVC KD-BT1 in my 2004 Durango. Plays thumb drives up to 8GB, has an adaptor for iPod and built in Bluetooth. Its an older model now, but, still works like a dream.

I personally stay away from the SD cards as I would lose them left and right.

Its really hard to get a bad stereo these days. Most of the time its all about user preference.-Lou

I do have an MP3 player, but it's only a 2GB. I can fit way more music on an SD card.

This one seems pretty nice. http://www.bossaudio.com/main/971

I believe Boss and Pyle are pretty much the same.....like Chevy and GMC. I may be wrong though.

Also, check the usable capacity of the stereo. Most of them have a limit. Like my JVC for example, it can only read thumb drives up to 8GB.-Lou

P.S. You may also want to verify if the radio recognizes playlists on the card/USB drive. I like making playlists and not all of them understand them, especially the lower end units.

Good points. I don't really use playlists much, so that's not too important, but I'd definitely like to be able to use the bigger cards.

I went on the Pioneer site, and it seems they don't offer a head unit with an SD card slot. That seems kinda strange to me.

Here is one that plays CD, USB and SD: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_105KDS1...0.html?tp=5684

I love JVC, you get the best bang for the buck. May not be the absolute best, but, you get the most for the money. -Lou

I really like JVC stuff too. I've had a fair amount of JVC stuff over the years, and it was always real quality stuff.

                  Here's what I did.
                  Chevy pickup with stock CD/Radio.
Most of these stereo's come with a port on the rear for connecting a 6 disc cd changer or whatnot to the head unit. Crutchfield sells a harness that connects to that port and transforms it to a left/right aux input. Went to Rat Shack and bought a L/R rca to 1/8" stereo pin. Connected it to the harness, plug in my 160gb iPod. Endless tunes...about $50. I added a subwoofer to add a bit of bass as the stock GM radio sounds good, but no bass. Use the door speakers only to push mids and highs now, and it rips. Best part is it looks completely stock to a would-be theif. My last truck was stolen just to pull the stereo.

Below is a link to these harnesses at Crutchfield. I'm sure they're available elsewhere, but I got mine there. This only works if you're happy with your factory radio otherwise.
