Short hair here. I've had long hair since my teens, but over the years it mattered less and less to me. I had been thinking of cutting it many times, but never quite got there, as I felt it was a big part of my identity.

Then around six years (or so) ago, an aquaintance of mine died following surgical complications. She was too young to go, and she left so many grieving people behind. I personally admired her for her straightforward attitude towards people and life. As a way of processing my personal sorrow, and a sign of respect, I went and had it all cut off. It just felt right. Her death started a personal transformation in me, and cutting the hair fit in.

Worst part is that I had to really convince the hair dresser that, "yes, I want you to cut it really really short! Use the electric cutter dammit!" It must be hard to be a hair dresser and see all that "empty canvas" just go?

It felt odd at first of course, but it wasn't long before I became comfortable with it. It is cooler and more comfortable in the summer, and it's easier to keep the bathroom looking tidy. Besides, my metalheadness generally comes across anyway, in the way I dress. The only times I miss my hair, is when people go nuts headbanging.

All that being said, all respect to people that keep their hair! Especially the older dudes that refuse to let it go.

Oh yea, and regarding if women like long hair or short hair.... hair has nothing to do with it. Its all about attitude. Long hair hasn't been a requirement for being in a metal band for almost 20 years now. Now you need full sleeves, a bald or shaved head and multiple pearcings. Unfortunately.. when you grow up and realize that you probably aren't going to be a rock star and you need a real job you can't cut off your full sleeves and neck and face tatoos and if you disfigured your earlobes like I see lots of kids doing lately (with those giant disks they put in their ears) you will need some pretty serious plastic surgery.

That's another thing. I'm sort of over wanting to be a famous guitarist. Sure I would take it in a heart beat, but I just want to play guitar for me. I'm done trying to impress. The hair has been something I've been contimplating a long time. I'm still very nervous and I can't help but feel like I'm selling out a bit.

Oh, and I'm very aware that chicks like personalities, but most chicks too shallow to get passed the initial hello. My hair is nice.. SOMETIMES. Someone here mentioned if their hair even gets the slightest drift of wind it's game over. Welcome to my world.

I had long hair right up until 2002, because I got sick of damaging my hoover. I'd malt all over the carpets to the point it would get wrapped up and burned onto the roller. Cut it all off myself.

Point is, who gives a shit what you look like? It's the music you play/produce that counts.

I shave my head every 1-2 weeks. I used to do it every couple of days but to be honest that was too much work for me. Now I just shave it on the weekends when I have time for a longer shower. I don't know if all chicks dig it, but my wife likes it so I guess thats all that matters hehe.

Oh, fresh high and tight every Sunday afternoon when I'm not deployed. Over here my hair is easily 3" on the top. I only shave the sides when I have to and the top about once a month.

I actually think I look my best with a fresh high and tight. It just works with my body type. I look like a George Lynch wannabe with long hair. lol

Dude, if your hair is actually making you nervous, you need to cut the shit off and get over it. Its only hair - it has no power, it doesn't make you who you are. Shave it down, buzz it, cut it GQ style whatever, but make the change and deal with it.

You need to decide how you want to look and don't be afraid of it.

I've had hair to my ass, but last couple of years, I've gotten it cut short, waxed it up a little, then let it grow till ears' length and have it cut again.

Long hair is way too much of a hassle, with it getting greasy and knotty so fast.

I had this bit of "internal conflict" I suppose you could say a while back. I decided when I get out of school I'll cut it for a job but until then I'll stick with the hair because it's just how I've helped define myself. I could do fine without it too, but I like it even if most girls don't dig it.

When you find the right lady she wont give a damn if you don't fit some social norm, but it is hard to get through the initial hello in metalhead form unless you're in a band.

Also I find it much easier to remain clean with short hair as I cut mine a while back when I was having issues with it but now it's much more comfortable to have long hair.
