I'm a bills fan and I still saw a lot that I liked in that game last night, true Leodis should have downed the ball(but still enjoyable, and I had to burn a vacation day to stay home and watch it !!!).
So in other words YES, I'm ready for some football ~
So should I assume we're all AFC East fans so far?Enjoying a rum and coke, just didn't have any coke...

the fukkin Jets D pitched a shutout on the road no less. Sanchez looked really good, has quick feet, gets out of trouble, only made one mistake on the interception TD.
Mondo game with the Patriots. Brady threw 53 times last night, Jets secondary best be ready cuz brady got better as the game went on.Not helping the situation since 1965!

You mean...
The days of Dick Butkus, Deacon Jones, Jim Brown, Walter Payton just to name a few.
Days when the Steelers were feared to play against.
Days when Roger Staubach, Terry Bradshaw, Joe Thisemen, Ken Stabler, Bart Starr led the offense with attitude and blissful execution like a military commander leading the troops.
Accurate shot gun arms like Marino that could scramble in the pocket waiting on a reciever to get open.
Offensive lines that could open up a hole and keep it open and hold the line all day and cripple a tough defense.
Linebackers that were fierce and couldn't wait to play because they were thrilled to have the opportunity to knock and hurt some oposing offensive player.
Yes, I said hurt.
Days when offensive and defensive players alike played with bloody fingers and hands and the blood soaked through their white hand wraps.
Days when players went hunting in the off season, now they go to the clubs and dance.
Days when special teams (punt and kick return teams) ran like a locomotive train and hit the player with the ball so hard, and he didn't get up.
Days when a late hit was okay.
Days when players could take care of mouthy overly cocky players out on the field and the refs turned their heads and played like they didn't see it.
Days when making contact with a reciever before he got the ball was okay.
Days when a quarterback did a quarterback sneak up the middle and got hurt if not a concussion. Days when playing in the bitter cold snow and wet sloshy mud was welcomed and players played harder and better in such condition.
Yeah, I don't see this stuff much anymore so I don't care to watch much these days.

Soap,
Of course I agree with you, but in this modern day of huge salaries. They just won't let the players roll in a lightning storm anymore(sarcasm intended), truly you're right. However if I didn't have this watered down American football, I'd prolly turn to the darkside and like soccer, or rugby, or give up on sports alltogether....
It ain't what it used to be....
GO MANCHESTER UNITED________(that was a joke) :PEnjoying a rum and coke, just didn't have any coke...

The nFL is slowly turning into badminton as we speak, but it's still great.
And we get to see all the or any game we want every week instead of being stuck with whatever the local dog teams are or what the CBS or NBC used to run in your town. Noq that is cool.
Soap , you left out the Raiders. you mentioned Stabler, my favorite QB of all time,
but the Raiders of the 70's were just as gangster as today's gun toting constantly arrested players-lolNot helping the situation since 1965!

You didn't catch Snake's or Marino's throws with just your hands.
Well, you could try but one of two things were gonna happen.
It was gonna hurt your hands (possibly injure them) or you just wouldn't be able to catch it, thus no successful completition. Coaches usually stepped in and insisted don't catch him with your hands, catch him in your chest.
Either way shot gun armed quarterbacks like Stabler and Marino you was best to take it at the numbers/chest where the pads come over and together at the chest. Otherwise catching it in the stomach from the shot gun arms of this men would knock the wind out of you. These guys had special hand picked receivers or there wouldn't be many successful first down pass conversions/completitions and etc. You had to know how to catch these men because they hurt to catch.
Like a pro baseball catcher.
If most of the time and much througout his early career his only caught pitchers that can throw 84/85. He won't make it 3-4 innings tops with a pitcher throwing 90+, any longer and it will damage his hand.
Every catcher comming out of High School or College should have experienced the heat of a pitcher that can throw 90+, it's the only way to toughen up his hand so he can go all full 7-9 innings.
You gotta do it in increments a little at a time or you'll damage his hand.
Same principle applies with the rare shot gun arm quarterbacks.
That reciever has to be either brought up on the team with that quarterback or hand picked by scouts that know what to look for in a reciever to catch such a quarterback. Otherwise most won't be able to catch him. They really hurt to catch if you don't catch them right.
Remember, shot gun armed quarterbacks aren't your typical common playboy look at me quarterback. Usually be default, their very nature they are a meaner more aggressive quarterback.
Which when Marino left he was one of the last of a dying breed.Peace, Love and Happieness and all that stuff...

Stabler didn't have near the arm of Marino, but he was very accurate.
The guy threw darts to Branch, Biletnikoff, Casper.
Lefty QB's are cool. Steve Young is very underrated in my book overall.
To this day, I think the "Sea of Hands" playoff game against Miami where the raiders won in the waning seconds of the game with Stabler going down but delivering the ball into Clarence Davis' hands in the end zone to win 28-26 surrounded by Dolphins is still the best game I've ever seen. Not helping the situation since 1965!

I honestly lost interest in football when he retired...
The Seahawks were the team I followed but Montana was my football hero. He wasn't the strongest, fastest, or most athletically gifted but I believe he was probably the smartest and definitely had zero quit on a play in him.GTWGITS! - RacerX

I'm a lifelong Raiders fan, Tommy, so you're speaking my language. I'll never forget that one. Didn't that game start with Mercury Morris taking the opening kickoff to the house for the fins? Just a classic from start to finish.
A couple of other great quarterbacks from Stabler's era that don't get enough love, imo: Bert Jones from the Baltimore Colts. A true badass with a cannon arm, and mobile. He was Elway before Elway was Elway. Dan Pastorini of the Houston Oilers. Another great player who had the misfortune of playing during the Steelers' & Raiders' heyday. After he retired, he got into hydroplane racing, and iirc, he had a horrible crash into the spectators & killed some people.Last edited by dg; 09-16-2009, 07:57 PM.
