  • Hellbat, what's the vibe in Vancouver? The last one in Torino was pretty insane, everyone was hammered 24/7, endless party... and yes.. the athletes too.

    • If Tommy saw how well Chris Drury was playing, he'd probably load up his pockets with fireworks and ride his bicycle into the side of MSG

      • Lots of people out in the downtown areas at night. Heavy security presence but they are letting any kind of 'celebration' continue without any issues. Lots of free events to attend going on with concerts, outdoor skating, etc. The cities have relaxed smoking bylaws for the olympics as well so you are seeing a lot more public smoking (tobacco ) going on than normal. We have the normal liquor license hours happening so bars and such are closing at 3AM.

It's a party atmosphere but not like a full on hedonism rave. It's kind of quiet reserved partying.

Cool, but how's the usual night life and music scene over there?
I'm definitely planning to visit that place some day. Just looking at the pictures the setting looks absolutely stunning, great symbiosis of nature and urbanism. You gotta have some fantastic architects on the payroll as Vancouver definitely has some of the best city planning in the world. Absolutely bitchin' skyline, and seems mostly post-modernistic instead of boring modernism.

            • The normal live music scene is pretty good except for rock/metal. There aren't really a ton of live music venues. There are jazz and blues rooms, and venues for more "highbrow" music, but the rock scene is fairly dead. The Commodore Ballroom is probably my favorite live music venue in town.

As far as nightlife I'm too far removed from the scene to give a good commentary. Closing time got bumped from 2AM to 3AM in the last couple of years but both of those are a couple hours past my natural bedtime so I'm out the door before then. I think there is a thriving underground "after-hours" scene in the city too, but again it's not my scene. I'd rather drink at home with friends than spend 4x the price per drink at a club.

There is so much to do here though that doesn't involve the normal night life. Want to fish, golf, and ski on the same day? No problem!

              • Today is another one helluva Hockey day...4 teams will be eliminated today!

It sucks that USA vs Switzerland is a day game...hockey is a night time sport
I also heard that some NBC affiliats in the pacific time zone are delaying the broadcast and not showing it live...wtf?

                • OTOH, the prime time game is Canada vs. Russia, and it really should be the best game of the day. I just bet my son's hockey coach a beer on it. He's Canadian, so I took the Russians. (Who'd have ever thought anyone in their right mind would actually take and cheer for the Russians when we/I was growing up! ) I'm fully expecting to be doing the buying, but it'll be fun regardless.

I was pretty uninterested last week in the games, but have been up until 2 am, or later, watching hockey this weekend and last night.

Funny you mention that Tommy...I've been so into the Winter Olympics that I just found out this morning that the Tigers signed Damon (aka gurly arm).

That park is too big in left field for him...he can run down balls to the warning track but he can't hit the cutoff man from there

DH would be where I'd park Johnny...

Great memory there! I just posted in the Old Members thread stickied at the top of the page. I notice that I really haven't posted much at all in the last few years, but thought I'd stop in and have been enjoying myself.

Edit: my location is up-to-date. Part of being gone has been getting bounced all over the country with relocations. I'm currently in KC, so no local NHL team. Last year we got to several Devils games out in NJ, including there ignominious exit from the playoffs.

That's good news...they originally had the Russians playing at 12:30am. I assume it was a ratings decision
