I could do this all day, it's not hard at all(I'm not a cop, but in my opinion it seems the system either corrupts them or they're pressured into it by other cops). I again have nothing but respect for the good people of law enforcement ~ it would be nice if we got some around here

yeah, but all those other jobs don't involve people shooting at you in your "normal" duties. Last I knew, fish don't pack Uzis..Police face danger even at a "normal" traffic stop, they never know what they are about to encounter. Pull a guy over for a broken tail light..guess what he's got a warrant and isn't going to jail so he just shoots your ass. Not in anyones regular job description.

It goes both ways. If I was the owner and the cop was a totally cool guy having a hard day, I'd help him out with a free meal or at least a discount. I have a real issue with power hungry driven dickheads who wear a badge. Maybe it's because I'm young; I've met some really cool cops and I've met some cops that must have been tormented as kids...

If I were a cop I wouldn't take shit for free. It sets you up for accusations of favoritism and gives an appearance of impropriety. With the way people go after cops for all sorts of shit, saving $9 on a rack of ribs is an awful stupid way to fuck your career up.

Here's a made up example that nevertheless could absolutely happen: Cop eats for free at a diner every day for 10 years. Never pays a dime. An employee gets pissed over getting fired, pulls a knife on the owner. Cop arrests him.

Now the cop has to get on the stand and basically recite his report. Defense lawyer claims the business owner started the fight. Cop says that's not how it happened. Defense lawyer points out that the cop has eaten there for free 200 times a year for 10 years. 2,000 visits, $8 a day burger, $16,000. Put yourself in the jury. All you know about this particular cop now is that he arrested the defendant but got alot of free shit off of the accuser. Are you feeling a little doubtful? Reasonably doubtful?

Now the guy gets off and sues the cop, claiming he got thrown down the stairs of the diner because the cop was acting as an enforcer for the diner, as the cop has been receiving compensation for the last 10 years from the business owner.

Could easily, easily happen and would at the very least be a negative to the officer's career, even if he's a totally honest, upright & good man.

I make up this example because I worked in a diner as a kid and the cops did get free coffee and food, some of them....but some of them refused that. So it's not just a given. I think each cop does what they want to do in that regard, and for the ones that pay it's obviously because they think it's a potential issue. And yes, we did like having them around, especially late at night when there were a shitload of drunks around- not real bad people or anything, but just typical disruptive punks. Having a cop at the counter made for a quiet half hour or so.

Not worth it.

EDITED to add: Yeah, the OP has clear issues with cops. Some are assholes, true enough. Most aren't. But it's AMAZING how if you live a pretty straight-up life just how LITTLE contact you'll have with law enforcement beyond a "how ya doin'" as you pass them on the street.

When I was a kid I did get hassled by cops....because I was doing illegal things. Drinking under age, trespassing, vandalism, all the other stupid things kids do. Seemed like I had a discussion with a cop every day! Later they'd come by because my parties were way too loud in college & in vacation houses after college. The nerve of those pigs, shutting down my horrendously loud party at 2am! Pricks! WHAT DO YOU MEAN THE WHOLE NEIGHBORHOOD DOESN'T WANT TO HEAR "JUMP AROUND" ONE MORE TIME WITH THE VOLUME AT 11? THE OPPRESSION!

Now that I'm in my 30's the only contact I have with the cops is when I report a crime or see one of the guys that do security at my building. It's probably been that way for a decade. So have hope! Someday the cops WILL stop hassling you! It'll probably be the same day you stop doing illegal things

This isn't to say that some people do get fucked with for no reason, but I'd guess that's .000001% of complaints. Everyone I know in life got hassled by cops....right up until the time they grew up. Miraculously, I have not heard of any harassment of any of them since!

If I were a business owner I too would give some freebies as a token of thanks for serving the community and having a presence in my establishment.

Something tells me some folks dont have high regards to law enforcement. I've had my share of dealing with bad prick cops too but it not a big deal really. Most are pretty cool when you break through the attitude...

maybe that's why you started kicking peoples asses in public in your later years...


sure, fireman, fisherman and roofworkers do dangerous and useful jobs too, but noone can expect a fisherman to do anything on his own risk once you got trouble in your restaurant.
others have mentioned it before, I think it's more for the shop-owners safety than beeing kind and grateful to a specific group of people.
would be the first time you get something for free just for beeing cool anyway...

I don't mind seeing the police in fast food restaurants, paying or not. While they are in there getting heart disease, I'm pulling wheelies at 100mph! I know they aren't waiting in some side street to nick me as I roar past.

Before I left school I worked in a hotel kitchen and the Old Bill used to come in for cups of tea and butties on cold nights. No problem, I'd feed them, let them get warm by the stove, have a chat. When I got a motorbike, I got stopped a couple of times.
"Where have you been?"
"Work"
"Where do you work?"
" The Salmonella Hotel"
"Ah, OK, no problem. Get your back light fixed, off you go".

I even used to get lifts home from outside the boozer in a police car on quiet nights when I was absolutely plastered and too pissed to walk. To this day I see one of the cops round the town, we always exchange a few words, I take the piss out of him and ask when he becomes Chief Constable etc.
I know if I have any kind of communication issues in any dealings I have with the law, I'll be able to give him a yell and it might, just might, save me some hassle. Not saying he'll drop charges for all those murders I did because I gave him a cup of tea 25 years ago, but I may get a bit more of a sympathetic ear when faced with another cop who thinks I'm an argumentative prick.

This world is full of enemies, I find it's best to try and make as many allies as I can, especially if the cost is a burger or two. It's a shit that I have to pay for mine, but if I'm a valued member of society, someone will buy me the odd drink now and again just so I remember his face when we meet professionally.

We have a similar program in NJ. The "Officer next door" I believe it is called. You get the house very cheap and have to stay there for 5 years I think. Oh, but the houses are in cities like Newark and Irvington etc. So really, the program is rigged for "some" people and unrealistic for guys like me.:think:

I'm wondering where this rumor of cops not getting paid enough started. Sure the risk is high, but so are other jobs, like deep sea fishing, soldier, steel worker, etc. And they know the risk when they take the job.
