  • if you love the beatles please don't read (Rant)

JCF went goofy on me for a moment so i hope this doesn't post twice. it's just not that important.

nothing in this post was intended to slander the beatles please read in full.

Actually if you hate them you probably shouldn't read this either. Yeah I know the 8th not a good day for this either but lets just say there's been a little too much push around me about how amazing john lennon was. And to those who feel that was I'm happy for you, please by all means continue to feel that way. Just stop pushing it on those of us who don't feel the same. There is no intent of beatles bashing in this post. this is just my frustration towards a select group who have insulted the music i love to build up a guy who doens't really need anymore buildup.

Ok first of all I know I'm going to word this wrong so just give me the benefit of a doubt before flaming on.

I am not a beatles fan. They have songs that i can listen to and enjoy, they have far more that i just want nothing to do with. It's a preference in musical styles not a slam - I listen to Cannibal Corpse and I can bet most people here don't. It's nothing personal.

What they did in the studio was amazing, what they achieved was amazing, i will not take anything from the hard work they put in. Likewise I will not take away anything from any musician who works hard and makes music and makes people happy.

On the flip of that coin I hate the "beatles" (note the quotes) The over sized machine the marketing mamoth of it all still to this day makes me ill. I am sick and tired of hearing how the music I love wouldn't exist with out them, that's a bold face lie. They may have inspired the people who make the music I love but it's core is rhythm and blues not English pop.

This is *NOT* The Beatles fault (The four people who made a band) they played music. It's the industry part of it and that certain group of ravid fans (IE the ones who think music began and ended with them and if you don't agree there's something wrong with you) who make me resent the beatles machine.

I may be a little overly sensitive to pushy music fans. One of the bands I truely hate is VH, and it had NOTHING to do with the music or the band members. There's only so many times you can get physically stomped on for not being part of that 'it' crowd before a band just becomes the enemy with out the band itself having any of the blame for it. Funny, five years later those same guys who beat my ass for not knowing who VH was thought i was cool because i wore the metal up your ass t-shirt. (Metal heads, got to love them)

Anyway the point of all this is please listen and love the beatles, but please stop cramming it down my throat.

yes. i work with and live around some old hippies and they are making me want to go ballistic.

if anyone is offended, that wasn't the intent. Seriously not the intent. this has all spawn from a beatles fan basically saying that my music wasn't relevant.

ok now here is the actual rant.

dont *#((ing yabber to me what a god like person lennon was when you have no idea who Dime was or what HE meant to me. Don't know who Randy Rhoads is? How about SRV? don't tell me how much better your little god is. he didn't move mountains he didn't move ME. I totally approve of you memorializing him but don't act like my hero was some second class wanna be because he wasn't a freakin beatle, sorry for you to be so freakin old that you can remember a world with out music but life has moved on there are more then just one musical flavor.. Hell even in YOUR day there was the rolling stones, The Kings, all sorts of other bands that played a HUGE roll in building music today.

    rant over

there was some things i felt like saying that would actually be insulting the band like they were the Twilight of their day. but this isn't about THE BAND. and the comment would have just been meant to piss the co-employee off. but god i wanted to say it.

so i rant here to keep the peace. all the things i felt like saying that would just cause escalation.
In the future though I need to remember to not buy guitars while on Nyquil

Dude don't you think it's a little weak to dislike a band because of the fans and how media portrays them? Who gives a fuck. Just enjoy the music or don't.
If I'd be worried about what other people think then I'd really hate bands like Pantera or Meshuggah as a lot of their fans are first grade douchebags. But I don't care about this trivial bullshit, I care about the music.
Music didn't began with The Beatles but they had a lot to do how the music since their era sounds like. As so many have stolen their songwriting ideas which were pretty new at the time in popular music vocal melody/harmony and chord progression wise. And Revolver totally changed how albums are made and in a good way.

the Beatles appealed to a lot more of the world then Pantera did, thus the over hyping of them as opposed to the overhyping of Pantera, where's the surprise in that? who gives a flying flank steak anyway,
listen to what you like and fukk everyone else right in the ass with a wire brush I say.
Not helping the situation since 1965!

Beatles are hyped alot, especially with Rock Band, etc.

Not as annoying to me though as the bandwagon trend to love Johnny Cash and flaunt CASH tee shirts as if these people discovered something on their own that nobody else has known for decades.

For what its worth, Axl spent more years making one record than the Beatles existed as a band. Beatles just a blip on the radar.

go re-read what I said. I don't like the beatles music because i don't like the beatles music. the point of this wasn't about the band at all but a few hyper fans who basically talked down the music i like because john lennon was a beatle and because of that he's better then everyone. and the hyper fans are people in person

What you forget is that it is about how many people were inspired to pick up a guitar or a drumstick because of this band. Many people would say Ace Frehley sucks but the reality is that he influenced more guitar players than a lot of bands. You may be into something like Cannabal Corpse but really how many people said fuck I want to do that!!

Most of the people you have listened to have at one time probably said, I picked up a guitar because of the beatles, same with EVH, Rhoads, Brian May, Joe Perry, SRV, etc etc etc
Don't worry - I'll smack her if it comes to that. You do not sell guitars to buy shoes. You skimp on food to buy shoes! ~Mrs Tekky 06-03-08~

yeah... 1983. Steve Stevens (no relationship to guitarist) i don't remember the other two guys names. As I recall it had to do with me having on a VH t-shirt with a lion or something on it and not knowing who the band was (I didn't buy the shirt it ws given to me) at the time I was sheltered christian kid, i wasn't allowed to listen to anything but country which makes me laugh now since the stuff my parents listen to (content wise) was just as dirty at the VH or any other c**k rock out there.

I'm confused by your response. The reference to CC was that I'm into music that others aren't into just the same as others are into music I'm not into.

and what everone seems to be missing is this had NOTHING to do with the merits of the beatles, it had to do with with several people talking down my music (and your music and everyone elses music that isn't the beatles) because it wasn't the beatles. it's just frustrating having people constantly telling me how much better their music is. I don't care how much someone else likes their music that's the point you can love it or hate it just don't try and force it on me. that's the whole point of this. it's not a comparison of bands beyond the fact that i'm tired of being talked down to because i don't care about the beatles.

and what irritates me is the same people who tell me how great they are have no idea where that bands genius actually stood. the stuff they were able to pull off in the studio is mind blowing. don't mistake my last of interest in their music as me not respecting what the accomplished they opened the doors for a lot of bands, new recording styles etc.

but again this isn't about the beatles. and honestly i should go back and edit that and remove the beatles name.

As I tried to point out, this was a rant about people in my real life who are getting on my nerves. not a contest between bands.

Part of the deification of Lennon has to do with his music. The other part has to do with his politics. As the years go by, the latter eclipses the former.

I do believe he's overhyped in both regards, as in his personal life he seems to have been a horror of a human being (treatment of Julian, etc). Having said that, I challenge you to go through their catalog and not find at least 5 songs that knock you out, even if you can't stand the band in general.

Full disclosure- I went through a heavy Beatles phase earlier in life and pretty much ruined my parent's early copy of Sgt. Pepper. Sorry, Mom & Dad.

I see Eak's point- Certain cultural "touchstones" are treated as sancrosanct, and woe betide he who dares go atray from conventional wisdom. It's easy to say "TUNE IT OUT", but you know what? For some reason I know EXACTLY what Jon from Jon & Kate Plus 8 did last night, and I never, ever, ever wanted to know or hear anything about him in my life...but for some reason, I know what he's up to, soup to nuts. Some things become almost culturally oppressive, and when you can barely bring up a band you like without some myrmidion piping up, "Well, you should go to the SOURCE and listen to Revolver!" all the time it does get tiresome.

So the "ideal" of the Beatles (not a perfect descriptor, I'll grant you) is BS, but damn, "A Day in the Life", "In My Life", "We Can Work It Out", "Penny Lane"..... shit, I can go on and on. Doesn't interfere with those songs getting me every time.

OOoh you were talking about VH. sorry I didn't catch that. Well it has to do with getting physically beat up for not knowing who they were. I shouldn't say hate anyway, and you're write I shouldn't hate them for what their fans did (if the guys were even really fans I might have just been target because i was 13 and smaller then them) so your point is well taken.
