I remember years ago when an electronic band Prodigy hit big and was very popular over here among the Russian speaking folks. And there were these Russian gangs who singled out folks and asked "Do you like Prodigy". When you answered "no" then they beat you up because everyone should like Prodigy. When you answered "yes" then they beat you up because only they were allowed to like Prodigy.
That was in mid-late 90's when the whole city was full of graffiti of wonderfully constructed sentence "Prodigy is rulez" and Smack My Bitch Up was constantly rotating on TV and radio stations."There is nothing more fearful than imagination without taste" - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

I do believe he's overhyped in both regards, as in his personal life he seems to have been a horror of a human being (treatment of Julian, etc). Having said that, I challenge you to go through their catalog and not find at least 5 songs that knock you out, even if you can't stand the band in general.
Full disclosure- I went through a heavy Beatles phase earlier in life and pretty much ruined my parent's early copy of Sgt. Pepper. Sorry, Mom & Dad.
I see Eak's point- Certain cultural "touchstones" are treated as sancrosanct, and woe betide he who dares go atray from conventional wisdom. It's easy to say "TUNE IT OUT", but you know what? For some reason I know EXACTLY what Jon from Jon & Kate Plus 8 did last night, and I never, ever, ever wanted to know or hear anything about him in my life...but for some reason, I know what he's up to, soup to nuts. Some things become almost culturally oppressive, and when you can barely bring up a band you like without some myrmidion piping up, "Well, you should go to the SOURCE and listen to Revolver!" all the time it does get tiresome.
So the "ideal" of the Beatles (not a perfect descriptor, I'll grant you) is BS, but damn, "A Day in the Life", "In My Life", "We Can Work It Out", "Penny Lane"..... shit, I can go on and on. Doesn't interfere with those songs getting me every time.
yellow submarine! ok that's what 4 (I'm actually trying to think of 5) oh! the lonely people song, 5
At one point i tried getting into the music. it just never got into me.
but what always did make me interested in them from a totally geek stand point was how they did stuff in the studio... i think it was the end of a day in the life where they had all four of them (if not more) in front of pianos all hitting the same note at the same time. now you could just dub it a billion times but they actually figured out a way to make the sound they wanted. they put in a LOT of work to get the sounds they wanted and my hats will forever be off to them for that.In the future though I need to remember to not buy guitars while on Nyquil

I guess this is why fanbois of a feather flock together. Fanbois of different feathers...well, they tend to peck each other's eyes out!_________________________________________________

Funny, most of my favorite Beatles tunes are rather obscure ones or not that well known. And I rarely listen to pre-Revolver stuff.
Some of those have influenced prog and psychedelic rock so much, specially Pink Floyd.

The greatest band that has ever been formed. Paul and John were the most prolific song writing team in history. There will never be a band that could top The Beatles.
They are also crazy hard to cover correctly. I should know.. I was in a Beatles Tribute band for a few years. If you want to nail a Beatles song you need to do a ton of rehearsing.
