  • Is this a craigslist scam?

    First I got this email:
    Hello,
Is item still available for sale,is there any pics for view if possible.
    Thanks,
    Alex
Which I thought was weird since pictures were on the craigslist ad. Then I got this:

Thanks for the prompt response to my mail.
I will be buying from you so please kindly withdraw the advert from C..LIST.
Please be informed that i will be paying with a certified check from my Bank
as i just moved here from Aspen Hill Of Maryland on a job transfer..I will
need the following details to mail the payment as soon as possible.
1.Name to be on the payment __________________2.Home address______________
    City
    ____________State _____________ Zip Code________________3.Cell phone
    #______________________
I will make arrangements for the pick up as soon as you have your money
I am completely satisfied with the advert and the payment will be delivered
within 2-3? working days.** I use a hearing impaired phone # and will
receive your calls via email **
So is this a scam? He wants to buy a room full of furniture for $500. Any issues with sending him information? What should I tell this guy? I'm thinking I want a check from a local bank so that I can cash it in person. I don't want to deposit it into my checking accounts.

Also, I thought this was weird. The incoming email was from:

      Alex Stone [[email protected]]

But when I reply to the email, it goes out as:

      [email protected]

So why does the email address change when I reply? In my original email I asked why his email address ended in .uk I asked if he was from the UK. He never answered that.

These are all the red flags:

        - Refers to merchandise as "the item"
        - Asks you to remove the listing
        - Drama regarding where they live
        - Certified check/wire transfer instead of cash
        - Have their own mover

It's a scam. Whenever doing a deal like that on Craigslist, state you want cash in person only. Like Jack said, don't bother replying to the guy, or just tell him to fuck off.

That's a scam. You can have some fun with them if you want. I had one send me a VERY legit looking money order. It looked to be stolen blank bank money orders as they have water marks, 3d ink and embeded strips. You next email will probably say that they will be sending a check for more than the amount and have the difference sent to the via Western Union.

Send him all of the required info that he asks for, just do it following Newc's way of dealing with stuff. Put Ed Roman's info into the e-mail.

                      I agree with bombtek!

Scam for sure. I have about $8,000 in American Express money orders and a few of those over the amount checks for a great laugh. Those were my reminders of dealing with craiglist when I tried to rent out a room.
Axewiedler pointed out the same things I was going to tell you.

Thanks guys. I just didn't reply back. If I did something nasty, with my luck he's be some sort of email hacker and F' up all of my stuff.
