Can you guys give any tips on shipping guitars without case? Is double-boxing sufficient? I know it is not generally recommended, but hopefully you know some safe way doing it...
If its a custom shop, you should probably throw in some foam peanuts.

Seriously...double boxing is great, but also slack the strings to reduce tension and swarm that sumbitch in loads of bubble wrap. I've shipped several this way and never had an issue.
If it's a bolt-on, I'd strongly suggest that you remove the neck - that reduces the risk of the headstock being forced to breaking point. If it's a neck-thru, make absolutely sure that you support the neck and especially the headstock / neck join area so any lever effect will be minimised
Popular is not the same as good
Rare is not the same as valuable
Worth is what someone will pay, not what you want to get
I usually have the UPS Store package my stuff. That way if it breaks, they can't blame it on the packing. Plus they do a fantastic job at my local store. I always get compliments from my buyers.
No need to slack the strings unless you're sending it from Miami to Denver.
If it's a tilt-back head, wrap the neck just under the tilt but not the head itself (or at least not as thickly), as Toe said.
Mummify the whole thing in bubblywrap or newspaper, pour some peanutz or crumples of newspaper or other cushioning into the bottom of the box, insert the mummy, then pour in your packing material, stopping every so often to bounce the box to settle the shifters.
Continue adding packing material and bouncing/packing it down until you can't feel the guitar wiggling in the box even if you shake it like a screaming baby.
I want to depart this world the same way I arrived; screaming and covered in someone else's blood
The most human thing we can do is comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.

Just don't do it like a pawn shop did. The took the Kelly and just wrapped it in cardboard. The body wing busted, but surprisingly the neck made it. I got a 50% refund for their bad shipping.
