Enough of this responsible spending crap. Oh boo-hoo you save your money and spend it on nice guitars. La di da. Sounds like a bunch of lawyers talking about their 10-tops and NOS tubes.

Let's here from the folks whose guitars have caused divorce, debt and desperation. Where's the guy who hocked the wheels off his trailer to buy a toothpastie Charvel?

btw - the wife says I can only have seven guitars and two amps. So thats my limit.

the wife doesn't enforce a limit - she already thinks that more than one is too many

She did get a bit shitty when I brought home another just before xmas, considering we had food, alcohol, pressies for the kids to spend our money on. Until I pointed out that I used an unexpected dividend to buy it and it was only $90 anyway. And then I finished up a new project mutt last night, so that's two additions in the last week and a half. I'm endeavour to amass a collection of fett-like proportions (and quality)

Yes, 7 and 2...that she knows of.... then u remove the false panel in the closet to reveal the stash of JC customs and marshall stacks
Kidding aside, there is definitely an advantage in acquiring similar looking guitars which don't raise eyebrows.

Yeah you better hope she doesn't start a serial number log

Yeah... tried it... doesn't work - I've basically got black and white guitars with one splash of color - a blue Ibanez.

                3 white "strats"
2 black "strats" & black SG (was 1 black strat, 1 black SG, 1 black LP)

She could pick out which one was new by the amount of enthusism I showed for it.

All good points in the thread. For me, I look at quality over quantity and right now I have 3 guitars, two of them are custom shop, Jackson SL2H and a Peavey HP Special - which was a 2005 NAMM guitar. I recently picked up a Charvel SoCal and love it. I don't see a need to have more than 3.

If I decide to get another, I will sell one of the three to fund it. I think rotating and refreshing your stock is far better than building a collection but it's a personal decision. It's not that I cannot afford it, it's just unnecessary. Fun, yes, but unnecessary. It is tempting, though!

As for guitars being an investment - very unlikely. For example, my HP Special will probably hold a bit more value being that it is a NAMM guitar. I paid $2,300 for it. If I were to sell I'd be thrilled to get $2K for it. That was my splurge for 2009!

my girlfriend relates to my guitars and amps only by color.

when I got my Splawn amp in white vinyl she looked at it. I was so pumped on it, and was playing it dialing in sounds, and I asked her "so what do you think?" she looks at it with the deer in the headlights stare and says "well,..... its white." she says the same thing for guitars "what you think of this one honey?" "well, .....its red."

There has been one or two persons on here that I think had a problem with buying too many guitars. I wouldn’t call them collectors because they did not maintain their collection in a way that would be considered normal. I have two guitars, a bass and two amps. They are not in the way but the wife will complain about them from time to time, but for the most part she doesn’t care about them. If I had more resources (money) I would have more. I am not a pro by any stretch of the imagination so to me getting more would be for cosmetic reasons. I would like a star because Chris Holmes is one of my favs and a Rhoads for the same reason. Remember though for most of us with wives or live in girlfriends. There is generally something they have you can point at as being excessive. I can’t see the floor of my wife’s closet because of her shoes. She also takes up the majority of our storage closet with boxes of comics and pez dispensers.

I don't think it actually becomes a problem until bills fail to get paid.
