I've seen this question come up on various forums and it confuses me. I'd want to learn a song because I want to learn it. Picking songs based on tuning just seems odd.....tail wagging the dog?

Yeah, playing "Sad But True" in standard pitch sounds fine.

So I woke up,rolled over and who was lying next to me? Only Bonnie Langford!

Exactly. If you love that song and want to learn it properly, then tune properly.

However, tuning to some random tuning then asking for songs to learn? Again, tail wagging the dog.

I assume this question arises because a guitar has been perfectly setup and intonated for a particular tuning?

BTW, since I got my AxeFx I don't worry so much about retuning for songs that are a half or whole step from standard as the AxeFx's pitch shifter does a good job. It does feel different, but sounds fine. And obviously you have to be louder than your guitar's acoustic sounds or you'll get clashing notes. Dweezil Zappa made an AxeFx Eruption patch with a half-step pitch shift on it. I've wondered if he uses that live or actually uses a guitar tuned down.

If I'm sitting at my computer with a guitar tuned to Eb I like to be able to put something on in that tuning I can try to play along to.

If I'm sitting at my computer, I can't play guitar and wank at the same time. God knows I've tried.

one of my absolute favs is the half step, then tune the Eflat down to Dflat...

I read an interview where Eddie says that he has played that song live as low as C# tuning with the lowest string at a B. I wonder if there is truth to that or if it was just him saying whatever.

I wouldn't doubt it... as far as that song goes, the ballsyness seem to go up with the square of the down tuning steps.

What I did, since I haven't got a guitar in E, I changed the pitch of the RIP album by Megadeth down to Eb, and am learning it this way, so when I do have a setup in E, I can play it right then.

Just a thought. Not quite what you asked for, but it can keep you occupied anyway, especially if you're in a different tuning and want to noodle about for a bit.

the reason i ask is because on my dk2 i dont use the locking nuts and i just turned all the fine tunning heads all the way down and tune normal. BUT my guitar is a bitch to keep tuning to different songs. So thats why im asking for half step songs.
