gadzooks, i went to australia in october of '92 for 8 days, i didn't know it could get cold enough there to hail.
Updrafts send rain drops high into the atmosphere where they freeze and then start falling and get blown back up into the atmosphere where they collide w/ super cooled rain drops and it freezes instantly to it making it grow in size. This then is reapeated numerous times till the hail stone is now either blown out of the updraft and then if falls to earth or its just to big and heavy for the updraft to support it and down it comes.
The only real temp that will affect if you get hail will be is heat, places like the tropics will only get hail at real high elevations where the temps dont change much day to day the air is always warm at lower elevations.

Brutal. With that sort of velocity I suppose it would have done a heck of a number on someone if it hit em.
I've seen cars that look like golfballs with all the little dents from hail, but I've never seen anything like THAT. Pretty amazing. Wonder what the weight of them was.
Right through laminated glass....it punched through both pieces & the laminate???? Geez.
Hmmm Google tells me I've lead a sheltered life. Photos similar to your damage abound, and some much worse

Melborne is far from Perth, no? Did your storm resemble this?

These cars look like extras in that shootout scene in "Heat""Quiet, numbskulls, I'm broadcasting!" -Moe Howard, "Micro-Phonies" (1945)

I think they use the Caprice as cop cars in the states, sort of a Pontiac G8, longer wheel base. It's a year old, $70000 grand car.
