      Tommy stole my thunder.
Steely Dan is the closest I get, and jazz fans
poo poo that stuff as "pop".

      I can't stand "free form"...if I can't boogie to it
after a dozen beers, I want nothing to do with it.

Zappa turned me on to some good stuff as well.

Despite what the name might imply, I'm not a huge Jazz fan (more of a Zappa fan) but I like Jazz if I'm in the mood for it.

I can't really name anything specific I like (not "smooth jazz" or Kenny G bullshit) - I really prefer live acts, I see some small-time acts come through town from time to time and they're great to just relax, have a few beers, and converse, kind of listening passively.

I don't really like Jazz lead guitar much at all, but I do like Jazz rhythm guitar. To me, Jazz is more about the bass/drums/horns.

And yeah, the whole 8 guys playing 7 different things stuff, kind of annoying. But a good groove is a good groove.

Mostly hardcore and groundbreaking stuff which was hated by the critics at the time. You know Coltrane, Miles (mostly Bitches Brew era), Ornette Coleman and so on.
Some early fusion like Return To Forever, Billy Cobham's solo stuff etc. not that cheesy 80's shit fusion. Plenty of old school... Monk had absolutely beautiful tunes, Armstrong's tone was beyond this world... can't stop listening to them.

Big Band swing is a great background music, Ellington, Goodman and the stuff... drummers from that school had the baddest sounds ever. Gypsy swing is always fun, specially from a guitar players perspective.
Let's see... Brubeck is smokin'... specially because of Joe Morello.. that sick bastard.
And of course Bill Evans... I think he was the greatest pianist ever, I have never heard anyone else playing so colourfully. Michel Petrucciani is also very colourful.

As far as the newer stuff goes Scandinavia has plenty of cool things... this distinctive Nordic sound they have really separates them from the other nu-jazz movements. French underground scene is always interesting, very experimental.

Basically anything that's cookin' and progressive is cool in my book. Can't stand this smooth crap, or most of those mini acoustic bands who miserably fail at playing old classics. Boring as hell, write your own tunes and grow some balls. You suck when you are not pissing off the critics or middle aged house wives.
Now this was made to piss of the critics, I fuckin' love it!
John Scofield (born December 26, 1951 in Dayton, Ohio) is a jazz guitarist and composer, who played and eventually collaborated with Miles Davis. A bebop mas...

I prefer a more fusion than straight Jazz but I love Joe Pass and traditional jazz as well.

I saw the Dave Brubeck Quartet twice and both times they were incredible. The dude is almost 90 and still kicks ass. I am hoping to see him again in June. In all honesty, it was better than just about any other concert I have ever seen, and I have seen quite a lot.

It was really weird... I never actually liked jazz until I took my Jazz Appreciation course in college. I guess the course worked, lol.

A couple of months ago I went to see Jean-Luc Ponty, always been a fan but then I realized how ridiculously good he really is. His tone on the violin is like a dream, his playing is so controlled it's a joke... and his intonation is just scary good... he has the ears of doom.. blistering parallel 3rd's over the board effortlessly, sick arpeggio voicings at fast tempos while playing bass lines on the low string.

Anyway when the concert was over and people started walking out I overheard some conversation between a man and a woman who previously knew each other.
Man: "So you are interested in jazz"
Women: "Yes.. well.. I thought jazz is black man playing a saxophone"

Sadly the concert hall was full of those nouveau rich idiots.

It's funny, I saw Brubeck and most everybody was wearing suits and shit. I was wearing a drug rug and cargo shorts last time. Probably something similar the first time.

I always wear jeans, chuck taylors and a rock band t-shirt when I go to bigger concert halls over here which play operas, symphonies and bigger jazz concerts.
A lot of folks in the crowd couldn't care less about the music. They are there to compare their clothing and accessories during the break. Sad, rich cunts probably think it makes them seem sophisticated when they attend such events. Not that they are really rich rich, more like fake nouveau rich, probably involved in some shaky business and desperately want to be part of some kind of "in" crowd. But once they open their mouths, they are worse than bums.
